Binghamton Sweeps Portland in Twin Bill

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets used a combination of strong pitching and early offense to sweep the Portland Sea Dogs in a doubleheader Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The pair of wins put Binghamton 23 games over .500, which is their high water mark this season.

Game One

The B-Mets scored five runs in the first inning and were backed by a strong pitching performance by Darin Gorski as they beat the Sea Dogs, 5-2 in the first game of the day.

Against Terry Doyle, the B-Mets wasted no time in getting the bats going. Danny Muno started the bottom of the first with a broken bat single, and Josh Rodriguez followed with a knock into right field that moved Muno up to third base. The next batter was Cesar Puello, who dropped an RBI single into left field to put Binghamton up, 1-0.

Allan Dysktra followed with a walk to load the bases, and Rhyne Hughes plated the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Darrell Ceciliani kept up the momentum by slapping a single into left field to load the bases for the second time in the first inning.

Wilfredo Tovar was next up and he delivered the big hit by blasting a bases-clearing double into the left-centerfield gap. Three runs scored as the B-Mets scored five runs and five hits in the first inning. After Tovar's knock Doyle retired 17 of the next 19 batters to finish the game, but that mattered little to Binghamton starter Darin Gorski.

The lefty tossed a season-high 6.0 innings on the hill, and earned his third Double-A win of the season. Portland scored single runs in the second and fifth, but scattered only three hits in their loss. Jeff Walters came into the game in the seventh, and recorded his league-leading 24th save of the season.

Game Two

The nightcap was more of the same for the B-Mets, as Jenrry Mejia threw five innings of shutout baseball en route to a 6-0 win over Portland. The Major League rehabber allowed three hits in his first Double-A start of the season, and allowed only one batter to reach third base throughout the game.

Offensively, Binghamton struck early once again against Portland pitching. Darrell Ceciliani led off with an infield hit against Jeremy Kehrt, and Josh Rodriguez moved him over the second base with a single into right field. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kehrt uncorked a wild pitch with Travis Taijeron batting to allow the first run of the game to score. One pitch later, Taijeron delivered a broken-bat, two-run single into left field as Binghamton went ahead 3-0 in the first.

The final three runs of the game all scored in the bottom of the fourth. After Taijeron led off with a double, Richard Lucas lined a double into left field to make it a 4-0 game. Three batters later, Ceciliani delivered the big blow with a two-run home run over the right field wall.

Mejia was taken out of the game after tossing 83 pitches. He earned the win on the mound, and was backed defensively with three double plays behind him during his outing. In the sixth, Hamilton Bennett took over for his Double-A debut. The lefty threw a perfect sixth inning, and worked around two base runners in the seventh to seal the victory.

The B-Mets (57-34) and Sea Dogs (46-46) conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM as RHP Erik Goeddel takes the mound for the B-Mets against RHP Matt Barnes for Portland. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
