BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The B-Sens opened the 2009-10 American Hockey League season with a 5-3 victory over the Atlantic Division's Hartford Wolf Pack.
Martin St. Pierre earned first star honors with a four point night. The Ottawa-native registered a hat trick and added an assist to line mate Ryan Keller's second period goal.
St. Pierre gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead in the first period, tallying goals at 6:17 and 9:18 respectively. Keller assisted on St. Pierre's first goal of the night.
At 9:13 of the second period, Keller would add to the B-Sens lead, scoring his first goal of the season, assisted by St. Pierre and B-Sens captain Denis Hamel.
Nearly three minutes later, Jeremy Yablonski, tipped a pass from Jim O'Brien past Hartford's Matt Zaba to give the B-Sens a commanding 4-0 lead.
Hartford managed to come within one goal, scoring three unanswered goals on Binghamton's Mike Brodeur. Hartford forward Cory Locke tallied a goal at 15:17 of the second period. With just two seconds remaining in the second period, Paul Crowder's shot deflected past Brodeur. Wolf Pack defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti earned an assist on both Locke and Crowder's goals.
Just 22 seconds into the third period of play, the Wolf Pack put some fear in the crowd of 3,927 at the Broome County Veterans Arena, as Locke tipped his second goal of the evening into the net, bringing the Wolf Pack within one goal, 4-3.
St. Pierre added some insurance for the B-Sens though, recording his third goal for the hat trick at 10:04 of the period and helping lead Binghamton to the 5-3 victory.
The B-Sens are now idle until they host to the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Fans can purchase the tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
