Big Sunday for Dwight Smith Jr. in Loss to Curve

Manchester, NH - Dwight Smith Jr. went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI but first-place Altoona salvaged the final game of the series in New Hampshire with an 11-5 win over the Fisher Cats on Sunday afternoon.

Smith tripled and scored in the second inning, singled in two runs in the sixth and hit his 11th home run in the ninth for the Fisher Cats (61-66).

Altoona's Erich Weiss had a tremendous day for the Curve (69-57). He doubled, tripled and homered and drove in seven runs. Weiss homered off New Hampshire starter John Straka in the first and doubled in three runs in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Weiss tripled in a run in the fifth inning and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh as Altoona opened a 10-4 lead. He had a chance for a cycle, but grounded out in the top of the ninth.

Tyler Eppler (8-9) allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings for the win. Straka (1-1) took the loss in his second start with the Fisher Cats.

Altoona's Tomas Morales hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth inning, the first of his career.

The Fisher Cats open a week-long roadtrip in Portland on Monday night against the Sea Dogs. RHP Conner Greene (4-5, 5.07) starts for New Hampshire against Portland RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (4-8, 5.01). Game time is 7:00 p.m. and coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

The final homestand of the season opens on Monday, August 29 against Trenton and Firefighter Appreciation Night at 6:35 p.m. For tickets and information, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
