Big Sixth Downs Curve in Erie on Opening Night
April 4, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, Pa. - A five-run sixth inning by the Erie SeaWolves was too much for the Curve to overcome in a, 10-6, loss on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. Jarek Cunningham doubled, homered and drove in two in a losing effort for the Curve.
Altoona actually scored the first run of the game on a Carlos Paulino double-play groundout with the bases loaded in the second. Andrew Lambo, who walked to start the inning, touched home plate on the grounder and the Curve took the lead, 1-0.
The SeaWolves immediately countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half off starter Brandon Cumpton (0-1) but Altoona had an answer waiting in the top half of the third. With two away in the frame, Cunningham homered off the neighboring basketball arena in left to tie the game at two.
That was as close as the Curve would make it the rest of the game as Erie pulled away with two in the bottom of the third. Drew Maggi's RBI double in the fifth made it a one-run game before Erie sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored five runs. The biggest blow of the inning came from Daniel Fields, who hit a grand slam off reliever Nate Baker to clear the bases and cap the five-run frame.
The Curve added a single run in the seventh on a Mel Rojas, Jr. RBI single and two more in the ninth but could not complete the comeback. Cunningham, Matt Curry and Alex Dickerson all had two hits in the loss for the Curve. Cumpton finished five innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Altoona (0-1) and Erie (1-0) will mix it up in the second-of-four beginning at 6:35 p.m. tomorrow from Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie. RHP Casey Sadler is scheduled to make his Double-A debut and start for the Curve while RHP Patrick Cooper gets the nod for the Howlers.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. For tickets and more information on the Curve homestand starting Thursday, April 11, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
