Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - On twelve hits, the Lakewood BlueClaws put up eleven runs and ran away with the game 11-1 for an important victory and a four game split with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Memorial Day Monday afternoon.

The BlueClaws (25-18), in a game they needed to play well to survive the series in first place, put up eleven runs in the victory and the scoring began in the fourth inning with the speed of Anthony Gose. Gose reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk and to third on a fielder's choice on a double steal, Sebastian Valle getting thrown out at second. He then scored on a ground ball in the infield to give the BlueClaws the lead 1-0.

The BlueClaws would then strike for the first of two four run innings against the Grasshoppers (24-19), the first in the fifth inning. Travis Mattair led the inning off with a walk before Zach Collier reached on an error and Troy Hanzawa singled in a run to make it a 2-0 lead. The BlueClaws then scored single runs on a ground ball fielders choice by Korby Mintken, a single by D'Arby Myers and a sacrifice fly by Jim Murphy. After the inning, the BlueClaws lead was 5-0.

The second four-run inning was in the seventh off relief pitcher Bryan Evans as Myers singled to lead off the inning, Gose walked before Valle tripled down the line in left, scoring both Myers and Gose. With Valle on third, Murphy walked to the plate and then blasted a two-run home run over the wall in left field, making it a 9-0 lead and tying Travis d'Arnaud for the team lead with four home runs.

The BlueClaws added their final runs in the eighth as Myers scored his second run of the game on a single by Murphy. Valle hit a double in the inning, allowing Myers to advance to third. Mattair then added an RBI single, which brought Valle home.

The Grasshoppers got their only run of the game in the top of the ninth to spoil the shutout.

Not to be overlooked is the performance by BlueClaws starter Heitor Correa (1-1), who picked up his first win of the season. He went seven innings, allowed just five hits and no runs. He has pitched 13 innings at home this season and has yet to allow an earned run. Ryan Ariail pitched a clean eighth before Ryan Bergh closed out the game to get an inning of much needed work in.

Brad Hand (2-5) did not pitch poorly in his six innings as three of the five runs he allowed were unearned. However, Evans was then roughed up in his two innings of work in the seventh and eighth.

The eleven runs ties for the most scored in a ball game this season and the margin of ten runs is the most for the BlueClaws this year.

The BlueClaws managed to get a split of a four game series to keep their lead in the South Atlantic League Northern Division. They will now welcome the last-place West Virginia Power to FirstEnergy Park for a four game series beginning on Tuesday at 6:35. The BlueClaws will call on Jesus Sanchez (1-2) to start the series and he will be opposed by Kyle McPherson (3-1).
