Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, N.C. - The Durham Bulls scored seven runs in the fourth inning en route to a 9-4 rout of the Charlotte Knights at the DBAP Friday night in the opener of a three-game set.

After the Bulls and Knights exchanged runs in the first and third innings, respectively, Durham erupted for seven runs in the fourth off the rehabbing southpaw Carlos Rodon. Casey Gillaspie got things going with a two-run double, and Mike McKenry followed with an infield single that scored Curt Casali. After a throwing error brought home Gillaspie, Kean Wong kept the carousel spinning with an RBI single to centerfield. Johnny Field then delivered a two-run double, putting the home side in front by an 8-1 count.

In the top of the fifth Charlotte cut in to the Durham lead when Yoan Moncada launched a two-run homer into the rightfield bleachers. The Bulls came right back in the bottom of the frame though, as Gillaspie and McKenry lined back-to-back doubles to make it a 9-3 game.

Charlotte added on a run in the eighth inning, but could muster no more as the Bulls improved to 10-2 against the Knights in 2017.

Gillaspie and McKenry led the nine-hit attack for the Bulls, each finishing with two hits and two RBI, while Willy Adames also tallied a two-hit evening.

In his second Triple-A start, Hunter Wood (1-0) earned the win for Durham after allowing three runs on five hits across six innings. Rodon (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on five hits across 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven.

The three-game series continues Saturday at 6:35 p.m. when RHP Brent Honeywell (6-6, 4.91) takes the mound for Durham opposite RHP Reynaldo Lopez (5-3, 3.91) for Charlotte.
