Big Fifth Inning Leads Isotopes to 8-1 Win

Albuquerque, N.M. - The Albuquerque Isotopes (9-9) used a five-run bottom of the fourth inning and some strong pitching to defeat the Oklahoma City RedHawks (10-8) 8-1 before 6,958 at Isotopes Park Monday night.

The RedHawks took the first lead of the game when Cody Clark connected on his first home of the season to break a scoreless tie in the third. It marked Clark's first home run since May 6, 2012 when he hit a walk-off home run against the RedHawks while playing for Omaha.

Albuquerque took control of the game with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth. Scott Van Slyke tied the game with an RBI double, and two batters later, Nick Buss put the Isotopes in front with an RBI bunt single.

A wild pitch brought home a third run, and Dee Gordon and Elian Herrera each added two-out RBI singles to make it 5-1.

Until that inning, RedHawks pitcher Rudy Owens had allowed just three runs total over his first 16 innings of the season. Owens (0-3) would depart after the fourth, giving up seven hits and a season-high four walks on the night. He struck out three.

The Isotopes added to their lead in the seventh when Van Slyke hit his league-leading seventh home run of the season-a two-run shot to extend the Albuquerque lead to 7-1.

Albuquerque finished the scoring with an RBI single by Herrera in the eighth.

Outside of Clark's homer, the RedHawks had a tough time generating offense. They went just 2-for-19 with runners on base, with both hits by Jonathan Villar. The RedHawks also placed just four runners in scoring position throughout the game.

The loss also marked the end of a couple of impressive streaks for RedHawks outfielder Trevor Crowe. He went 0-for-4, snapping a 15-game hitting streak as well as a 38-game on-base streak dating back to last season.

After Albuquerque starting pitcher Matt Magill was pulled after four innings, the Isotopes bullpen held the RedHawks scoreless over the final five innings. Making his season debut, Anthony Ortega (1-0) took home the win after tossing two scoreless frames.
