Arkansas Travelers News Release

Tulsa, OK - After being rained out on Tuesday evening, the Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers played the middle two games of their four-game series by playing a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Drillers took the first game of the twin-bill 2-1 behind an eleven strikeout effort by RH Chad Bettis.

Arkansas struck for the games first run in the top of the third inning. Drew Heid led off with a single and moved to third after a double by Jett Bandy. Rolando Gomez followed by lofting a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to bring in Heid. Bettis avoided any further damage by forcing Kaleb Cowart to bounce out third to end the frame.

The Travs had an opportunity to add to their lead in the fourth when Robbie Widlansky smashed a liner to center field. In the process of trying to catch the ball, Tulsa CF Delta Cleary Jr. tripped. The mishap allowed Widlansky to advance all the way to third with a one out triple. However, the Travs could not capitalize. Bettis struck out Taylor Lindsey and forces Randal Grichuk to fly out.

Brandon Hynick started for the Travs on the mound and made his Arkansas debut by facing his former club. Hynick was twice a member of the Rockies organization and pitched for the Drillers in 2008 and 2012. After being sidelined to begin the season because of an oblique injury, Hynick cruised into the fourth inning by allowing only two hits.

After retiring the first batter of the fourth, Hynick surrendered three hits to the next four batters and allowed Tulsa to take the lead. Henry Wrigley's two-out double tied it and Kiel Roling singled to shallow to center to put the Drillers up 2-1.

Over the final three innings the Travs twice moved the tying run in scoring position but could not find a way to even the score on either occasion. Rolando Gomez was left at second to end the sixth inning, as was Drew Heid in the seventh.

Bettis pitched two outs into the seventh before turning the game over to Michael Solbach, who was able to record the games final out on way to earning his second save.

Bettis earned his first win and improved to 1-1 while Hynick was the hard-luck loser and fell to 0-1.

Buddy Boshers and Caleb Graham contributed by combining to pitch two no-hit innings to keep the Travs within a run.
