Vancouver Giants News Release
Calgary, AB - Tyler Benson had four points and Jack Flaman scored twice to lead the Vancouver Giants to a 5-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday afternoon. It was Vancouver's first road victory of the season. Radovan Bondra and Ty Ronning also had goals for the Giants.
The Hitmen out shot the Giants 12-1 in the first period but weren't rewarded with a goal until the final three minutes of the frame when Jordy Stallard tipped a point shot past Vancouver goalie Ryan Kubic from the right circle.
Benson bagged his first goal of the year to even the score in the second period, completing a nice toe drag before ripping a shot past Hitmen goalie Kyle Dumba from the high slot. Bondra gave the Giants the lead with a power play marker just after the midway mark in the stanza, scoring on a wrist shot from the left wing after a beautiful cross-ice pass from Thomas Foster. Beck Malenstyn responded by tying the game for the Hitmen at 2-2 just 35 seconds later, but Ronning put the Giants ahead again with a hard wrister after Benson did well to force an attacking zone turnover and set him up for the goal.
Both of Flaman's goals came from around the front of the net. He scored his first of the night on a power play just 22 seconds into the third period and added another at 9:29. Matteo Gennaro scored a late goal for Calgary.
Ryan Kubic made 30 saves, including an impressive goal line stop in the third period, to pick up the win in goal. Vancouver went 2-for-3 on the power play.
The Giants will visit the Edmonton Oil Kings at the new Rogers Place on Tuesday night. Face-off is set for 6:00pm.
Vancouver's next home game is on Wednesday, October 19th, when the G-Men welcome the Saskatoon Blades to the LEC. For tickets, click here or call 604.4.GIANTS (604.444.2687).
