South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that LHP Mike Belfiore has been activated from the disabled list and will start tonight at Kane County. Belfiore takes the roster spot of RHP Brad Wilson, who has been reassigned to short-season A Yakima.
The left-handed Belfiore was on the disabled list with a strained forearm since July 1st. A supplemental first round pick last June, Belfiore has not yet pitched in the second half. His last outing before the all-star break was just 2.0 innings of four run ball in a defeat against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Belfiore is 1-6 with a 3.88 ERA in 14 starts on the season and has not won since April 23rd at West Michigan.
Belfiore will start tonight and is the last remaining starting pitcher from the Opening Day roster. Charles Brewer, Eric Smith, Chase Anderson, and Dan Taylor were also starters to start the year, but all have since been promoted to Visalia.
Wilson was 0-1 in three games with South Bend this season, appearing once as a starter and twice in relief. He had an ERA of 11.05 while striking out five and walking five in 7.1 innings.
Wilson was a 33rd round selection by the Diamondbacks in last June's draft from Cal Poly Pomona. He appeared briefly with South Bend in 2009, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings over two games in relief last July.
Most of Wilson's 2009 season was spent with the Yakima Bears, where he was 2-3 with a 5.65 ERA in 18 appearances (five starts). Wilson walked 27 but struck out 39 in 36.2 innings for Yakima last season.
Wilson was 0-2 with a 7.80 ERA in three starts for Yakima this season. He has allowed 20 hits in 15.0 innings, while walking nine and striking out 11. He also made one appearance for triple-A Reno in a fill-in role, allowing just three runs but taking the loss.
The South Bend roster currently stands at 25 active players plus two on the disabled list. The Midwest League allows for 25 active players.
The Silver Hawks take on the Kane County Cougars tonight at 7:30 PM Eastern Time at Elfstrom Stadium. For more information about the Silver Hawks or to purchase tickets, please visit www.silverhawks.com.
