Bees Take Iowa Series

July 21, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release

The Salt Lake Bees picked up a road series win, as they edged Iowa 5-4 on Thursday afternoon to take three out of four from the Cubs. The Bees grabbed the lead in the second inning on a two run single by Brendan Ryan and extended it to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Ryan in fourth. Iowa scored two runs in the fifth off of Salt Lake starter Zach Nuding and had the bases loaded with one out, but Javy Guerra struck out Jorge Soler and Mark Zagunis to preserve the lead. Quintin Berry drove in a run with a double in the sixth to make it 4-2. In the seventh, Cliff Pennington tripled and scored on a single by Carlos Perez to make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bees reliever Alan Busenitz walked two batters to give Iowa runners at first and second with one out, but Mike Morin fanned Zagunis and got Tim Federowicz to fly out to end the game and earn his second save. Guerra (3-1) went one and two-third scoreless innings to pick up the win. Ryan led the Bees with two hits and three runs batted in, while Nick Buss added a pair of doubles. Craig Gentry and Pennington continued their rehab assignments from the Angels with Gentry going 0 for 5 and Pennington 2 for 3. With the win, Salt Lake went 5-3 on their road trip to Omaha and Iowa.
