DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (42-54) opened the series with a 12-7 loss to the Salt Lake Bees (45-48), Monday at Principal Park. Iowa tabbed 13 hits but went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position in its third consecutive loss.

Daniel Vogebach highlighted the offense, tying a career high with four hits. He drilled his 16th homer of the season on the first pitch of the ninth to boost his RBI total to 64. John Andreoli contributed a single and a triple with three RBI.

Trevor Cahill struggled in his first rehab start for Iowa, allowing the first five batters of the game to reach to give Salt Lake three early runs. Cahill threw 57 pitches, 30 for strikes, and exited after 2.2 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Iowa fought back with three runs in the second to knot the game. The I-Cubs loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a single from Kristopher Negrî"n. Andreoli knocked a base hit to bring in two and later in the inning, another run was plated when Matt Murton grounded out to first.

Back-to-back RBI triples from Kaleb Cowart and Rafael Ortega helped Salt Lake to four more runs in the fifth to propel the Bees ahead. Carlos Perez hit in another run in the sixth to extend the visitor's lead to 8-3.

Salt Lake kept Iowa at bay until the seventh. Murton began the inning with a single and with one out, Vogelbach followed suit. Jeimer Candelario doubled to bring in a run, but the I-Cubs were limited to the sole run in the inning.

The I-Cubs and Bees traded runs through the late frames, but Salt Lake was able to hold on. Miguel Mejia (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. Geoff Broussard (2-2) collected the win with two one-run innings pitched.

Iowa and Salt Lake continue the series at 12:08 p.m. tomorrow at Principal Park with Drew Rucinski scheduled to take the hill against his former club. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
