New Britain Bees News Release

(Central Islip, NY.)- Thanks to a strong performance from Cole Johnson and more big games for Jon Jones and Craig Maddox, the New Britain Bees shut out the Long Island Ducks 6-0 in the first of four at Bethpage Ballpark this weekend.

PITCHERS OF RECORD

W: Cole Johnson (3-3) | L: Bobby Blevins (1-2)

Coming off a rough outing in his last start, Johnson returned to form against the Ducks. The right-hander did not give up a single run in seven innings of work, striking out three in the process. It was the fifth time in seven starts on the year that Johnson held the opposition to one run or less, and he lowered his ERA to a minuscule 1.88.

Once again, the duo of Craig Maddox and Jon Jones were at the center of the Bees' offensive attack. Maddox began the scoring for New Britain with a long solo home run one the very first pitch of the second inning against Long Island starter Bobby Blevins. The homer was the left-handed hitter's third home run of the season, which tied him for the team lead in that category.

Jon Jones would soon join Maddox at the top of the Bees' home run list. The outfielder- who hit his first two home runs of the season Thursday against Lancaster- went deep again tonight, this time leading off the fifth inning. Jones also started the Bees' four-run rally in the seventh inning, doubling with one out (his second of three hits on the night). He would score on a Brandon Chaves RBI single, and the Bees would go on to tack on three more in the inning on RBI hits from Jovan Rosa, Maddox and Jonathan Roof.

The Liberty Division rivals continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1:05 PM, with the second game beginning at 6:35. The Bees will send Josh Zeid and Brandon Fry to the hill in games one and two respectively, while the Ducks will counter with Jack Snodgrass and Bruce Kerns.

Bees Buzz: For the second straight game, eight of the nine members of the Bees' starting lineup picked up at least one hit...Anthony Marzi has stepped up for manager Stan Cliburn over the past couple games, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings over the past two games, including two scoreless tonight (one hit allowed, two strikeouts)...Craig Maddox extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games (also has a six-game streak)...
