Bees Season Ends With Defeat to TinCaps

Burlington, IA (September 17, 2009) - The Burlington Bees saw their season come to an end losing to Ft. Wayne 4-3 Thursday night at Community Field in game three of the Midwest League championship series. The Western Division champion Bees finished with a post-season record of 4-4 after defeating Kane County and Cedar Rapids in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Ft. Wayne struck first by scoring one run in both the second and third innings. They then doubled their lead scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bees got within one run scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Juan Graterol led the inning off with a solo homerun. After two outs were recorded, Fernando Garcia singled and then stole second and third. Patrick Norris then reached second on an error, which scored Garcia. Adrian Ortiz then singled, which scored Norris and the Bees trailed 4-3. The Bees got two runners on in the sixth inning but could not get the tying run home. They then went down in order during the final three innings.

The Bees were outhit 9-5. Graterol and Garcia each had two hits accounting for all but one of the Bees' hits on the night.

Manauris Baez got the start for the Bees and took the loss. In five innings, he allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. James Thompson and Blaine Hardy each pitched two scoreless innings. Thompson allowed one hit with one strikeout. Hardy allowed two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Including the post-season, the Bees finished the season with a record of 68-79 and were western division champions for the second year in a row. The back-to-back playoff appearances marked the first time the Bees made it to the post-season two years in a row since 1977 and 1978.
