Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Burlington's offense was consistent on Monday night, scoring a run apiece in the first four innings and scoring two in the fifth, cruising to an 8-3 victory over Clinton in the series finale at Ashford University Field. With the win, the Bees (19-24) took the series from the LumberKings (23-20) three games to one.
The Bees got on the board in the first as Michael Pierson started the line with a one out single off of Clinton starter Kyle Wilcox (1-3). After Wilcox got Jared Foster to fly out to left, he gave up a two out lined single to Jared Walsh. That set up Ranyelmy Alberto, who hopped a ball over Logan Taylor at third for a single, scoring Pierson to make it 1-0.
Burlington would add another in the second as Tanner Lubach reached base with one out on a throwing error from Logan Taylor. Wilcox then walked Josh Delph, and then gave up a ground ball single to left to Juan Moreno that loaded the bases. Michael Pierson came up next, and grounded a ball to first baseman Conner Hale, whose only play was to touch the first base bag. It allowed Lubach to score, giving the Bees a two run edge.
The LumberKings would respond against Burlington starter Joe Gatto (1-5) in the bottom of the second as James Alfonso lead off with a double down the left field line. Dalton Kelly reached on a fielding error from shortstop Juan Moreno that kept Alfonso at second. Conner Hale then singled to load the bases with nobody out, but Logan Taylor hit into a double play that still scored Alfonso to cut the Clinton deficit in half. With runners at the corners and two out, Chris Mariscal delivered with a single up the middle, scoring Kelly to tie the game.
However, the Bees came back with a run in the third as a leadoff walk to Jared Walsh came around to score on a two out double from Jordan Serena, giving them a 3-2 lead. In fourth Josh Delph walked to lead off the inning and Juan Moreno reach on a sac bunt attempt that Kyle Wilcox threw wildly to first. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and Jared Fosters ground out to third brought home Delph to make it 4-2. Burlington had nobody on against Wilcox with two outs in the fifth, but a walked to Serena and a stolen base set up Tanner Lubach, who plated Serena with a single to extend the Bees lead to 5-2. Wilcox was yanked after that for Jeffeson Medina, who let Lubach score on a two out single from Moreno.
The LumberKings got a run back in the sixth after Luis Liberato lead off with a triple and scored on a Rafael Fernandez ground out to first. That's all the LumberKings would get, as Zach Hartman shut them down over the final two innings to pick up his fifth save.
Tomorrow night the LumberKings welcome the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to town for a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, with Lukas Schiraldi (3-3-, 3.68) going for Clinton against Miguel Diaz (0-3, 3.38) for Wisconsin.
