Bees Fend off Bandits for Third Straight

(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (67-71) won their third straight game, knocking off the Quad Cities River Bandits (60-78) by the score of 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.
The Bees got off to a quick start, taking the lead in the first inning. Jahmai Jones and Brennon Lund started the bottom of the first with back-to-back walks. Matt Thaiss gave the Bees the lead by spraying a single into left, putting the Bees on top, 1-0.
After Quad Cities tied it on a Jake Rogers home run in the second, the River Bandits took the lead in the fourth. Arturo Michelena doubled to left and moved to third on a wild pitch. Michelena then gave the River Bandits the lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
The Bees sent eight men to the plate in the fifth, retaking the lead. Tanner Lubach started the inning with a double and then scored on a one-out triple from Brennon Lund, tying the game at two. After a two out single by Serena put the Bees on top, 3-2, Troy Montgomery doubled to give the Bees a 4-2 lead.
Quad Cities made it a one run game in the top of the seventh inning. Randy Cesar started the frame with a single and then moved to second on a Spencer Johnson single. After a bunt single loaded the bases, Dexture McCall hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Cesar, cutting the Bees' lead to 4-3.
Burlington added much need insurance in the bottom of the seventh, getting a run on a sacrifice fly by Connor Justus and a double steal, scoring Matt Thaiss, upping the lead to 6-3.
Quad Cities made it interesting, scoring two runs in the eighth but Blake Smith (1) came on from the bullpen and recorded the final four outs, earning the save, securing a 6-5 win for the Bees.
Luis Pena (5-9) earned the win for the Bees while Adam Whitt (4-7) was charged with the loss. The Bees were eliminated from playoff contention after Wisconsin defeated Beloit. The Bees and River Bandits will wrap up the 2016 season on Monday afternoon at 2:00. Erik Manoah makes the start for the Bees against Matt Bower for the River Bandits.
