Bees Fall Short in 1-0 Loss
May 6, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Jake Boyd pitched a career-high six innings, but his throwing error allowed the Lake County Captains to escape with a 1-0 victory on Monday afternoon at Community Field.
It was a pitcher's duel during a Kids Day at the ballpark, but the Captains (10-19) took the final game of the three-game series courtesy of an unearned run in the ninth. LeVon Washington walked and advanced to third on a pickoff attempt by Boyd that was thrown past Wade Hinkle. Washington scored on a single by Dorssys Paulino.
The Bees (10-16) put two men on in the bottom of the ninth with one out thanks to a Wade Hinkle walk and and an Anthony Bemboom single, but Francisco Valera got Chevy Clarke to strike out swinging and Andrew Ray to fly out to end the game.
Reid Scoggins drew the start for Burlington, and struck out a season-high seven batters in three perfect innings. The outing lowered his earned-run average to an even 1.00. The right-hander has now given up just two earned runs in 18 innings, while striking out 22 batters. The first Captains hit came on a leadoff double in the fifth by Joe Sever off of Boyd.
Captains starter Ryan Merritt was throwing a no-hitter of his own until Michael Bolaski hit a ball up the middle that went off of Meritt's glove. Dorssys Paulino could not get a solid handle of the baseball, allowing Bolaski to reach without a throw.
The Bees got a solid hit off of Merritt in the sixth when Sherman Johnson doubled down the left field line, but he was stranded on base. Merritt threw seven scoreless innings, alowing two hits and one walk, while striking out five batters.
Burlington will have Tuesday off before closing out its nine-game homestand with a three-game series against the Kane County Cougars. On Wednesday, Aaron Newcomb will face Pierce Johnson at 6:30 p.m.
