Bees End Trip with Loss to Whitecaps

Grand Rapids - MI -The Burlington Bees (48-53) lost the series finale to the West Michigan Whitecaps (53-42), 4-3, on Monday night, at Fifth Third Ballpark, in Grand Rapids.

After not scoring a run in Sunday's ballgame, the Burlington Bees took the lead in the first at-bat of the game. Troy Montgomery got the game started by socking a solo home run to right field, his first as a member of the Bees, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.

West Michigan wasted little time, coming back to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Rashad Brown singled and then moved to second when Will Maddox walked. The next batter, Will Allen, grounded a single into left, scoring Brown, tying the game at one. The Whitecaps then took the lead in the second inning. Leo Laffita walked to start the inning and then moved to third on a throwing error, putting runners at first and third. Jose Zambrono hit into a double play, scoring Laffita, giving the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead.

The game stayed at 2-1 until the top of the eighth inning. Jordan Serena drew a walk to lead off the inning and then moved to second when Troy Montgomery walked. Serena then moved to third on a double play hit into by Matt Thaiss. With two outs, Serena came home to score on a wild pitch, tying the game at two.

West Michigan answered again, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth. Jose Azocar would single with one out and then would move all the way to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Franklin Navarro singled to left, scoring Azocar, giving the Whitecaps the lead back to 3-2.

The Bees weren't done yet as Jordan Zimmerman drew a lead off walk in the ninth. Brendon Sanger then chopped a single into center, putting runners at first and second. After Connor Justus moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. The Whitecaps intentionally walked Jared Walsh, loading the bases. After a strikeout, Jordan Serena drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Zimmerman, tying the game at three.

Derek Hill led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to center and then stole second base. After an error put runners at the corners, Will Maddox was intentionally walked to load the bases. Will Allen then shot a single into right, scoring Hill, giving the Whitecaps a 4-3 win.

Drew Smith (1-1) earned the win for the Whitecaps while Eric Karch (2-5) was charged with the loss. The Bees return home on Wednesday when they host the Beloit Snappers at 6:30 at Community Field with Austin Robichaux on the hill for the Bees.
