Bees Cling to Victory Over Sox in Series Finale, 9-8
July 3, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Sky Sox and Bees took a slugfest down to the wire tonight, with Salt Lake finally prevailing, 9-8, with another shut down performance from their bullpen.
The game looked bleak for the Sky Sox in the early innings. Though rehabbing Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa took the hill tonight, the team couldn't get into a groove. With De La Rosa's command missing and the Bees' bats dialed in, the visitors plated five runs in the first on the strength of two singles, three walks, a double, and a triple.
Though the Sox would score once in the inning's bottom half, the Bees struck again in the second - scoring three more times to take a commanding 8-1 advantage.
But the Sox were persistent tonight, clawing back into the match with a sustained, consistent offensive attack. Plating another run in the bottom of the second, 8-2, the club would plate runs in every inning through the sixth.
Meanwhile, the pitching staff settled down, allowing just one run through the sixth frame - buying time for the bats to draw within one at the end of the sixth, 9-8.
But the Bees' relief corps abruptly rose to life, holding the Sox scoreless through the night's final three innings. Though the Springs continued to battle, Salt Lake was able to record timely outs when they needed them most - holding onto their one run lead through the ninth to snatch a 9-8 victory.
With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to 37-45 while the Bees improve to 42-40.
The Sky Sox will head to Fresno tomorrow to begin a four-game set with the Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
