Portland Beavers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - Royce Huffman was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI as the Portland Beavers defeated the Tucson Sidewinders 9-7 in 10 innings at Tucson Electric Park on Wednesday night. With the game tied at 7-7, Jon Schemmel drove in Luke Carlin in the 10th inning on a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
The Beavers (57-82) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, but a six-run rally in the sixth inning for Tucson (74-63) tied the game at 7-7 forcing extra innings.
Reliever Scott Cassidy (4-4) recorded two strike outs in two innings as he retired all six batters he faced to earn his fourth win of the season. Closer Jared Wells earned his eighth save of the season.
Emiliano Fruto (0-1) allowed two runs, both in the 10th inning, in four innings of work for the loss. Tucson starter Evan MacLane gave up seven runs in just two and a third innings - five of his seven runs came in the third inning. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Sidewinders.
Brian Myrow was 3-for-5 to bring his league-leading batting average to .359. Myrow now owns a six-percentage point lead over Iowa's Geovany Soto in the race for the 2007 PCL batting title. Soto did not play Wednesday.
With the scored locked a 7-7, Carlin and Myrow led off the 10th inning with back-to-back singles. Huffman then advanced the runners with a bunt single to third base. Schemmel gave the Beavers an 8-7 lead with a sacrifice fly to left field. Two batters later, pinch hitter Justin Hatcher drew a bases loaded walk giving the Beavers a 9-7 lead.
The Beavers took their first lead of the series in the first inning. Michael Barrett hit an RBI single to centerfield and then scored on a force out by Huffman to give Portland a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Beavers build a seven-run cushion as they sent 10 men to the plate. Base hits by Brady Clark, Paul McAnulty and Myrow loaded the bases for a three-run double by Huffman. A double by Schemmel to left field plated Huffman with a one-out for a 6-0 Portland advantage. Keoni Ruth then drove in the fifth run of the inning with line drive to centerfield for a 7-0 Beavers lead.
The Sidewinders rallied to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning scoring six runs. Portland's Adrian Burnside gave up two runs on four consecutive base hits and a bases-loaded walk before he was replaced by Aaron Rackers. Still with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Carlos Quentin scored Mark Johnson as Tucson chipped away at the Beavers lead 7-4. Rich Thompson and Matt Erickson followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 7-7 before the Beavers could record the final two outs of the inning.
Tucson tallied a run in the third inning. After a lead-off walk, Jared Ball scored on a single by Erickson to trim the Beavers lead 7-1.
Portland starter Steve Faris allowed three hits in 4.0 innings and recorded four strikeouts in his Triple-A debut. Shawn Estes retired all three batters in the first inning in his second major league rehabilitation start with the Beavers.
Notes: Faris became the 64th player to make an appearance this season with the Beavers setting a new club record since Portland returned to the PCL in 2001. Faris was transferred to Portland from Lake Elsinore prior to the game ... There was a 33-minute power-outage delay in the bottom of the third inning as a result of an electrical storm in Tucson ... Huffman started just the third game of his career at shortstop on Wednesday.
