Beast Spoil Thunder's Teddy Bear Toss with Fucale's First ECHL
December 17, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK - Brampton Beast captain Brandon Marino netted two goals and netminder Zach Fucale was perfect between the pipes with 26 saves as the Beast exacted their revenge against the Adirondack Thunder with a 3-0 victory at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Saturday night.
The shutout was Fucale's first of his ECHL career as he was perfect between the pipes to help the Beast win two out of three games against their North Division rivals.
Luke Pither scored into the empty net in the dying minutes of the game and David Pacan recorded two assists, giving the Beast their sixth victory in their last seven games.
Both teams played a hard-fought, defensive opening period that saw the Thunder outshoot the Beast 12-10 in a scoreless frame.
The Beast continued to fight hard into the second period and were quickly rewarded for their efforts. David Pacan placed a perfect pass onto the stick of Marino who was waiting on the doorstep. The Beast captain quickly one-timed the puck into the open net and beyond an outstretched Thunder starting goaltender Mason McDonald, giving the Beast the first lead of the game at 8:33.
The hometown Thunder pushed back hard throughout the remainder of the second period but Fucale's strong play, including several highlight reel glove saves, kept the Thunder off the scoreboard.
The Beast came out flying in the final period and it was Marino once again playing the role of the difference-maker. He once again received a beautiful pass from Pacan and fired a quick wrist shot that beat McDonald just 33 seconds into the third period, giving the Beast the all-important two-goal lead.
Brampton played tonight's game with only four defenseman due to injuries and recent transactions but played a smart, stingy game and kept the high-powered Thunder at bay in each period.
Luke Pither iced the game at the 18:37 mark of the final period as he hit the empty net.
The Beast played a near-perfect final period and allowed only six shots against to lock down their first shutout victory of the season. The fans in attendance were ready to toss their teddy bears on the ice following the first Thunder goal but the strong defense of the Beast prevented such a celebration as the Thunder were shut out for the first time this season.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Molson Three Stars: 3) David Pacan (BRM) 2) Zach Fucale (BRM) 1) Brandon Marino (BRM). Prior to the game, forward Connor Leen joined the Beast for his first game with the club. He signed with the Beast this past offseason, but elected to start the season playing in Italy. He was held off the scoresheet.
The Beast have three games left on their current four-game road trip before the holiday break. The Beast return to action on Tuesday, December 20 as they head to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on the Indy Fuel at 7:05 PM.
