Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, May 8, 2008-The Newark Bears rallied from a 2-1 deficit by scoring 4 runs in both the 6th and 7th innings to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-5 Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

In the 6th inning, the Bears tied the score on second baseman Juan Francia's throwing error and Bobby Hill's dash to home plate, scoring from second base. The big blow in the sixth was centerfielder Keith Reed's opposite field, three-run home run to right that put the Bears ahead 5-2. The home run was Reed's first of the season. He also had an RBI triple in the 2nd inning, and finished with 4 runs-batted-in.

Newark (6-7) put the game away by scoring four more runs in the 7th inning. The Bears strung together five consecutive hits with one out, with Hill and second baseman Brian Burgamy delivering RBI doubles, Randall Simon contributing an RBI single, and Jose Herrera plating run on a ground out.

Hill extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games, by going 1-3 with a double, 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Burgamy was 2-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Bears starter Pat Stanley allowed only 2 runs and 1 hit over 4 innings of work, but he walked 7 batters, and gave way to left-hander Cory Willey in the 5th inning. Willey (2-0) earned the win, surrendering just 1 run in 2.2 innings of work. Right-hander JJ Trujillo also pitched well out of the bullpen, retiring all 4 batters he faced, striking out a pair.

Lancaster (4-9) managed only five hits in the game. Left-fielder Michael Woods extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games by going 1-5 with an RBI.

Left-handed reliever Nate Hoelscher (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing 7 runs (3 earned) over 2.1 innings.

Friday night, the Bears host the Barnstormers at 7:05 PM. Will Cunnane (1-0) starts for Newark, while Mike Nannini (0-2) gets the nod for Lancaster.
