Traverse City MI: The Traverse City Beach Bums are pleased to announce that Jose Vargas will return for a sixth season with the team in 2016. He will be taking on a new role with the franchise as a player/coach.
"We are very excited to have Jose back as both a player and as our 2016 hitting coach," said Manager Dan Rohn. "He is not only an exceptional baseball player and team leader, he is a Beach Bums fan favorite."
Vargas was the MVP of the 2015 Frontier League Championship Series, the 2012 Frontier League MVP and is the Beach Bums career leader in games played (416), doubles (102), home runs (71) and RBI (308). He is coming off a season in 2015 where he recorded a career-best .314 batting average with 19 doubles while hitting 10 home runs and driving in 51. He also reached the 100-hit mark for just the second time in his Traverse City career.
In 2013, Vargas helped TC to its third playoff appearance in four seasons, hitting .262 with 25 doubles, 12 homers and 57 RBI.
His best season came in 2012 when he hit .290 with 29 home runs and tied the Frontier League record with 100 RBI on his way to winning the Morgan Burkhart Award. He was also the driving force that season behind a team record 64 wins.
The Ventura, Calif. native came to Traverse City in 2011 after three seasons in the White Sox organization and made an immediate impact, hitting .261 with 14 homers while knocking in 63 runs.
The Beach Bums begin defense of their championship Friday May 13th at Southern Illinois. The home opener at Wuerfel Park is Friday May 20th vs. Joliet.
The Traverse City Beach Bums are the 2015 Frontier League Champions and will be playing their 11th season of professional baseball in Northern Michigan starting May 2016. All home games are played at Wuerfel Park, a state of the art ballpark located in Blair Township, MI. The Beach Bums business offices are open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, Season Tickets, Group packages, patio tables and suites are all available for the 2016 season.
