Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums are pleased to announce they have added Ricky VanAsselberg to their coaching staff for the 2016 season.

"We are looking forward to bringing Ricky on as our Assistant and First Base Coach. He has won 11 Championships in his repertoire and we are excited to have him join our organization," said team manager Dan Rohn.

VanAsselberg, a Louisiana native, may be new to Traverse City, but he is hardly new to winning. He is entering the Beach Bums organization with 18 years of professional baseball experience and many wins under his belt. "I am very excited to join the coaching staff, and I am looking forward to working with Rohn, he's been in the game for years," said Ricky, "I can't wait to work with the staff and have a successful year."

VanAsselberg attended Baptist Christian College in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was a member of the back-to-back National Small-College Championship teams in 1995 and '96, while being named two-time small-college All American.

Before transition to coaching, VanAsselberg had a seven-year professional playing career as a catcher and corner infielder from 1996-2002. He made his debut with the Alexandria Aces in 1996 before signing with the Baltimore Orioles organization in '97. He spent the rest of his active career in the independent ranks with Alexandria and Springfield/Ozark of the Texas-Louisiana League and Rio Grand Valley of the Central League.

Ricky made his manager debut in 2006 as a member of the Alexandria Aces of the independent United League. During his three years with the club, he made it to the United League Championship series all three seasons, and took home the Championship in 2006 and 2007, while being name Manager of the year. From 2009-2010, VanAsselberg spent two seasons as Manager of the Shreveport-Bossier Captains, then went on to become the Field Manager for four seasons with the Grand Prairie Air Hogs. Last season, prior to joining the Beach Bums coaching staff, VanAsselberg was the Manager of the Bridgeport Bluefish.

The Traverse City Beach Bums are the 2015 Frontier League Champions and will be playing their 11th season of professional baseball in Northern Michigan starting May 2016. All home games are played at Wuerfel Park, a state of the art ballpark located in Blair Township, MI. The Beach Bums business offices are open from 8:30 am to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday.
