Beach Bums Take Opener in Lake Erie

AVON, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums(35-45) came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Lake Erie Crushers(38-44), taking the first game of this weekend's three series, 5-2

With two outs in the top of the third inning, Marcos Derkes singled to left field then stole second. Ryan Bottger then followed with an RBI single to give the Beach Bums the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Robb Paller doubled to right, Connor Oliver walked, then both executed a double steal, putting runners at second and third. Jose Barraza lifted a single to right, driving in both runners, and Lake Erie took the lead.

It took until the sixth but the Beach Bums tied the game up when Bottger scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Will Kengor. In the seventh, Steven Patterson led off with a single, extending his hitting streak to twelve games. Giancarlo Brugnoni and Gaby Juarbe each followed with infield hits to load the bases with nobody out. Two batters later, Derkes grounded out, driving in Patterson. Bottger followed by ripping a triple to the right-center field gap, plating two, and the Bums led by three.

Tucker Simpson had another solid start, improving to 3-3 with tonight's performance. He went six innings, allowing two runs, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three. Brad Duffy suffered the loss after coming in for starter, Stetson Nelson. He gave up three runs, four hits, while falling to 1-2. Luke Barker hurled a perfect ninth for the Beach Bums, striking out the side for his fifth save of the season.

The Beach Bums and Lake Erie Crushers will be back in action tomorrow night for game two of this three game series. On the mound for Lake Erie will be Steve Hagen while the Beach Bums counter with Benjamin Libuda. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 6:45pm with the Miller Lite pre-game show on 101.9- The Bay and online at TCBeachBums.com

Don't Forget- Coming up on Friday, it's our final FANtastic Friday Fireworks show, immediately following the final inning. Gates open at 5pm and first pitch against the Lake Erie Crushers will be at 7:05pm

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Shop are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays.
