Beach Bums Split Wild Doubleheader

The Traverse City Beach Bums'(37-47) and Washington Wild Things(42-42) opened this week's three game series by sharing a doubleheader The Beach Bums won game 1 in ten innings, 6-5, then Washington took the nightcap, in the regulation seven innings, 9-7.

Washington started the night off with a solo home run by Rocky Rodriguez, his seventh of the season, in the first inning. The Beach Bums took the lead for the first time in the third. Marcos Derkes reached base after a wild pitch strikeout, then stole second. Will Kengor drove him in with an RBI double, then scored himself when Steven Patterson doubled. Washington took the lead back in the fifth, on a Grant Fink two-run double, making it 3-2.

In the top of the sixth, it was Traverse City's turn to take the lead. Gaby Juarbe led off by getting hit by a pitch, then scored on an RBI triple by Jeff DeBlieux. Derkes followed with a single up the middle to plate DeBlieux giving the Bums the lead. In the bottom of the frame, Chris Grayson hit his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to right, tying the game. In the ninth both teams took advantage of the international tie-breaker rule. The Bums got their run when Steven Patterson scored on a Juarbe RBI sacrifice fly, then Washington tied the game when Austin Wobrock scored on a disputed balk call. In the tenth, Derkes drove home DeBlieux to give the Beach Bums the lead for good as Washington couldn't respond in the bottom of the game.

James Ball gutted his way through the two international tie-breaker innings for the win to improve to 5-3. He allowed an unearned run on one hit, a walk and two strikeouts. Brian O'Keefe is stuck with the loss, falling to 2-2.

Game two of the double dip, was riddled with defensive errors, as both teams combined to commit nine. The Beach Bums got on the board in the first when Derkes walked, stole second, moved to third on a Vargas fly, then scored on an error. Washington didn't take long to tie the game, when Andrew Heck scored on a David Popkins grounder in the bottom of the inning. They then took the lead in the bottom of the second, when Kyle Pollock hit a solo homer and John Fidenza scored on a Chris Grayson grounder, making it a 3-1 game.

In the third inning, both teams combined for ten runs and brought twenty men to the plate. The Bums were first, with a crazy two out rally. Ryan Bottger started with a single then Vargas hit an infield single then an error moved the runners to second and third. A passed ball allowed Bottger to score then Will Kengor reached on an error and Vargas scored to tie the game. After Elijah Trail walked, Kengor and Trail scored on a two-run triple by Steven Patterson. Washington scored six in their portion of the inning when Popkins scored on an error, Grant Fink hit a two-run single, Austin Wobrock hit an RBI double, and Ricky Rodriguez hit a two-run single, bringing the score to 9-5.

The Beach Bums started to chip away in the fourth when DeBlieux and Derkes walked, then DeBlieux scored on a Jose Vargas RBI single. DeBlieux led off the sixth by doubling to the left field wall. Two batters later, he scored on a Ryan Bottger groundout. In the seventh, the Bums put the tying run on base but could not complete the comeback.

Former Beach Bums' pitcher, Ashton Perritt was credited with the win, pitching just 1/3 of an inning, allowing one run, on two walks, improving to 1-1. Jacob Lanning only went one inning in relief but allowed six runs, three of the earned, on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. He falls to 4-6. Kolin Stanley wiggled his way through the seventh for his third save of the save.

The Beach Bums and the Washington Wild Things will play the rubber game of this three game series tomorrow night. On the mound for Washington will be Chase Cunningham while Tucker Simpson goes for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 6:45pm with the Miller Lite pre-game show on 101.9- The Bay.
