Beach Bums Fall in Slug Fest

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were doubled up by the Washington Wild Things 16-8 in a slugfest during the opener of a three-game set in Pennsylvania.

The Beach Bums bats got started early, scoring four runs in the second inning against Washington starter Brian McCullough. Mike Victor singled to start the frame and Brian Lapin followed with a double into left-center. Kyle Maunus drove in a run with a ground out and Robby Alcombrack made it 2-0 with a bloop single to left. Mike Eppinig doubled with the bases loaded to cap the inning.

McCullough would throw only three innings in the game as the Beach Bums touched him for three more runs in the third inning to open a 7-0 lead. Mike Victor and Brian Lapin led off with consecutive opposite field singles to right. Kyle Maunus drove in a run with a double to left center. Robby Alcombrack followed by lifting a sacrifice fly and Brad Miller drove home a run with a single to center.

Washington made a fierce rally, plating three runs in the bottom of the third and adding four in the fourth to tie the game and chase Shawn Joy from the ballgame. Grant Psomas, who is second in the Frontier League in homers, hit his ninth of the season to center in the third, a three-run shot. Kris Rochelle drove in three runs with a bases loaded double in the fourth. Joy did not factor in the decision, allowing seven runs (six earned) in his three innings.

During the sixth inning, Washington got a three-run homer off the bat of Jacob Dempsey on the way to scoring four times and taking an 11-7 edge. The Wild Things plated two more in the seventh including a Michael Parker homer, and tacked on three in the eighth. Brad Miller homered for the Beach Bums in the eighth inning, his second of the year.

The Beach Bums totaled 14 hits in the contest. Mike Victor was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. All of his hits went the other way. Corey Whiting, Brad Miller, Kyle Maunus, and Brian Lapin all had two hits in the game. Maunus, Miller, Mike Epping, and Robby Alcombrack drove in two runs each.

The Beach Bums continue the series with the Wild Things tomorrow night in a 7:05pm game. RHP Brett Bostelman (5-0, 0.88), who leads the Frontier League in wins and ERA takes the ball for the Beach Bums opposite RHP Zach Groh (0-1, 3.65). The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM.
