Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release

The Chesapeake Bayhawks made Albany midfielder, John Maloney, their top selection in the 2016 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, held on Friday afternoon in Baltimore.

The Bayhawks chose Maloney in the third round and the 22ndoverall selection. The Bayhawks acquired that pick from the Florida Launch for attackman, Niko Pontrello.

Maloney was named second team All-America East as a junior after scoring 16 goals and dishing off 20 assists last season. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound product of Victor, New York also gobbled up 54 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers last seasons.

A graduate of Victor High, Maloney was named to the 2013 America East All-Rookie team as a freshman after scoring 18 goals. Maloney scored 22 goals as a sophomore and now has 56 career goals entering his senior season. He is also a two-time America East All-Academic selection.

"One of our goals going into the draft was to improve our team speed and John Maloney is one of the fastest players in NCAA lacrosse," said Bayhawks Head Coach Brian Reese. "John has a good motor and a really high IQ. We think he'll be a great addition to our team."

The Bayhawks traded their first round pick to the Charlotte Hounds for attackman, Matt Danowski. The Bayhawks then traded their second round pick (11thoverall selection) to the Ohio Machine for defenseman, Dana Wilber.

Wilber, a second round pick in 2014 out of Drexel, was an All-Star selection last season, and Ohio's Defensive Player of the Year as a rookie

"We did not think we could get a player of Dana's caliber in the second round of the draft. Dana is a proven MLL performer, an outstanding cover guy who will help our defense immediately," Reese said.

The Bayhawks chose Yale midfielder, Mark Glicini, in the fourth round (30thoverall). A resident of Mahwah, New Jersey and a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Glicini started as the short stick defensive midfielder on the faceoff unit for Yale. He scooped 28 ground balls, caused nine turnovers, and totaled eight points in 2015.

The Bayhawks traded their fifth round selection to the New York Lizards, and the chose Loyola-Maryland attackman, Zach Herreywers, in the sixth round.
