BayBears Sweep Twin Bill
May 25, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - The last time the Mississippi Braves hosted a doubleheader at Trustmark Park, they defeated the Tennessee Smokies in a one-run game then, got blasted thanks to a big first inning by the visitors, and lost game two. Monday afternoon's twin bill against the Mobile BayBears was eerily similar.
Mobile got an unearned run in the top of the second that would prove to be the game-winner in game one. Orlando Mercado walked and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Braves' starter Deunte Heath. He advanced to third on a deep fly ball by Chris Rahl and scored on an infield single by Evan Frey. The Braves would later threaten, but they were unable to break through against Mobile's Barry Enright.
Heath gave up the one unearned run in a strange outing that included three balks in six innings. He took the loss and fell to 2-3 on the year. Bryan Dumesnil came on to toss one scoreless inning.
Enright improved to 3-3 on the season by tossing 5.1 scoreless innings. Daniel Schlereth earned his third save with 1.2 shutout innings.
The BayBears jumped out to a 4-0 lead on five hits and an error in the top of the first in game two. Rahl singled home Pedro Ciriaco and James Skelton to get the BayBears on the board. Rahl scored on a throwing error and Orlando Mercado would score on a passed ball to give Mobile a big early lead.
The Braves answered with back-to-back homers in the home-half of the inning. Brandon Hicks got his third homer and Concepcion Rodriguez followed with his second long ball of the year. The last time the M-Braves hit back-to-back homers was on July 31, 2008 when Reid Gorecki and Kala Ka'aihue went deep consecutively. After one, the Braves trailed 4-2.
Mobile tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth to make the final, 6-2.
The Braves record fell to 1-7 in doubleheader games.
Jeff Lyman gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits through three innings of work and fell to 3-3 on the season. Brett Butts threw two scoreless innings and Steve Marek gave up two runs in one inning. Kevin Gunderson threw one scoreless inning.
Cody Evans allowed two runs on three hits through three innings. Reid Mahon threw three scoreless innings and improved to 1-0 on the year. Daniel Stange threw one scoreless inning to finish out the game.
The Braves travel to Birmingham, AL to take on the Birmingham Barons in a five-game set Tuesday through Saturday.
