Bay Sox Limited to Five Hits in 6-2 Loss to Swamp Bats

New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The cardiac kids from New Bedford could not pull off their third comeback of the weekend, dropping to 13-16 in a 6-2 loss to the Keene Swamp Bats on Sunday night at Paul Walsh Field.

After two thrilling comeback wins on Friday and Saturday in extra innings, the Bay Sox bats were silenced for just five hits and two runs, while Keene knocked 13 hits in the victory.

Starting pitcher Brendan Jenkins (San Francisco) lasted just three innings, allowing three runs for his third loss of the season. He was the losing pitcher in Keene's 6-1 win at home, as they swept the Bay Sox in the team's two encounters this year.

The Swamp Bats jumped on Jenkins for a run in the first inning on Sunday night. Ethan Stringer led off with a single, and he moved from first to third on a single by Dean Lockery. Stringer scored on a sacrifice fly by Alexander Brewer to allow Keene to strike first. Jenkins battled back after allowing another base hit to whiff the final two hitters in the first and limit the visitors' damage.

Keene picked up three more hits, all singles, and an untimely error to tack on two more runs in the second off of Jenkins. Lockery drove in first baseman Patrick Sullivan with an infield single, as Nick Neville (Notre Dame) made a great backhand stop at short but could not throw out the speedy infielder. A grounder to third base should have been the final out of the inning, but it was bobbled and booted by Luke Bakula (Kansas), allowing the Swamp Bats to cross the plate yet again. The three-run start was uncharacteristic for Jenkins, as the Bay Sox righty was coming off a terrific outing in the Bay Sox' suspended game on Wednesday night in Mystic.

Jenkins was surprisingly replaced on the hill in the top of the fourth by Logan Maitland (CCRI), who made his third appearance of the year after joining the Bay Sox on July 8th.

After being limited to just one hit in the first four innings, the Bay Sox came up with a clutch hit from the bat of Jordan Fucci (Samford) in the fifth. Dan Schock (Sacred Heart) started the frame by striking out, but reached base after a passed ball on strike three. He was replaced on the bases by Neville on a fielder's choice, and the sophomore from Virginia scored on a deep drive to the gap in center by Fucci. Center fielder Tucker Bradley made a diving attempt at a catch, but came up empty, which allowed Neville to easily come home for New Bedford's first run of the night.

Unfortunately for New Bedford, the road team came right back to regain their three-run lead in the top of the sixth off of Maitland. Sullivan reached on a single to start the inning, and moved to second on a sac bunt. A wild pitch from the Tiverton, RI native put Sullivan at third, and he scored on a sac fly from Lockery, who victimized the Bay Sox all night long.

Andrew Tumbelty (Rider), who scored the winning run as a pinch-runner in last night's dramatic victory over Mystic, came in for the seventh inning. After a leadoff K, Keene added two more runs for a 6-1 lead. A walk and a bunt single put runners at first and second for Sullivan, who drove in Mitchell Webb with a single to right field, and a passed ball after a hit batter plated Bradley for Keene's sixth run.

Reliever Matt Gill came in for the bottom of the seventh, and New Bedford was clearly glad to see starter Gavin Hollowell leave the mound. Schock and Neville struck consecutive singles, and an error from Gill on a pickoff attempt to second base moved the two ducks up 90 feet. Karsten Sherman (Keiser) drove in Schock with a groundout to the right side for his 11th RBI of the season.

Second baseman Corey Joyce (North Carolina Central) made the defensive play of the night in the top of the eighth, diving into short right field on a blooper by Robert Boselli III before jumping up to throw out Alexander Brewer at first for the outstanding double play.

Keene closer Zach Spangler shut the door in the ninth, retiring the Bay Sox in order to close out the 6-2 win.

New Bedford will have their final day off of the season (weather permitting) on Monday, and will resume their crazy late-season schedule on Tuesday against the Ocean State Waves. Their next home game will be on Thursday night, where they host the Danbury Westerners for their second doubleheader in as many nights. Game 1 starts at 5:30pm and is the resumption of a July 1st encounter that is tied at 6-6 in the seventh and final inning.
