Bats Victorious in Season Finale, 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- On Labor Day, the Louisville Bats defeated the Indianapolis Indians, 4-1, at Louisville Slugger Field. In the final contest of 2016, the Bats finish in sole possession of second place in the International League West with a record of 71-73.

In a game of lasts, right-handed pitcher Keury Mella (1-0, 1.29) made his first Triple-A start, earning the victory, putting the Bats' series record above .500 this year, at 21-20-4.

Louisville jumped out front first in the fourth inning after first baseman Seth Mejias-Brean drove in a run, only to see the game notched up the next half inning after a solo shot landed in the right field patio deck.

The Bats scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning after a two-out base knock by third baseman Tony Renda. Mejias-Brean's RBI triple and catcher Chris Berset's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning added the final two insurance runs to solidify the victory.

Mella's victorious line consisted of seven innings of work, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out six on 99 pitches, 69 for strikes. Right-handed pitcher Kevin Shackelford secured his eighth save of the season.

Indianapolis's starting pitcher, right-handed pitcher John Kuchno (1-4, 5.22), finished with the no-decision. He threw six innings allowing one run, two walks, and striking out three. Left-handed pitcher Josh Smith (2-4, 7.36) was handed with the loss.

The Bats are off until the 2017 season with the closing of the 2016 season. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
