Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - With a chance to win the season series in their final meeting of the year against the Louisville Bats (23-23), the Gwinnett Braves (17-30) managed just two runs on six hits in a 6-2 loss on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

Right-hander Omar Poveda (L, 3-3) delivered his seventh-straight quality start for the G-Braves as he held the Bats to three runs on four hits over 7.0 innings, but he was outdueled by Louisville right-hander Chad Reineke. Reineke (W, 4-3), who tossed 7.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision against Gwinnett on April 25, went 7.0 innings with two runs allowed on six hits for the win on Tuesday.

The G-Braves did get off to a good start, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Todd Cunningham tripled with one out and came around to score on an RBI single by Tyler Pastornicky, making it 1-0.

The Bats got to Poveda in the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Billy Hamilton walked and Henry Rodriguez singled to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a strikeout, Felix Perez cleared the bases with a two-run triple, making it 2-1. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Josh Fellhauer, extending the lead to 3-1.

Cunningham brought Gwinnett one run closer in the fifth. After a two-out single by Jose Constanza, Cunningham smacked a double over Fellhauer's head in right field, cutting the Louisville lead to 3-2. Constanza's single extended his International League-best hitting streak to 18 games.

Poveda set down the final 14 batters he faced, recording his team-leading eighth quality start, but the G-Braves never scored another run of support. Kevin Whelan (H, 1) threw a scoreless eighth inning and Yohan Pino struck out two in a perfect non-save ninth for the Bats.

The Bats added separation with three runs against the Gwinnett bullpen. In the eighth inning, Mike Hessman clubbed a two-run homer off of reliever Ryan Buchter to make it 5-2. In the ninth inning, Louisville tacked on another run as Corky Miller belted a solo home run off reliever Pat Egan, raising the lead to 6-2.

Cunningham led the Gwinnett offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Joey Terdoslavich went 1-for-4 with his IL-leading 19th double as well.

Hessman went 3-for-4 with his ninth home run and two RBI for Louisville, falling a triple short of the cycle. Miller added his third home run and went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The Gwinnett Braves are off on Wednesday and return to action on Thursday night at Coolray Field. Game one of a four-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens is set for a 6:05 PM start. Left-hander Daniel Rodriguez (2-3, 5.77) will start for the G-Braves against left-hander Ramon Garcia (1-4, 5.20) of the Mud Hens.
