San Jose Barracuda News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Barracuda (@SJBarracuda), proud American Hockey League (@TheAHL) affiliate of the San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks), and General Manager Joe Will announced today that the club has signed Forward Matt Fonteyne (fon-TAYN) (@M_Fonts) to an AHL contract from the Everett Silvertips (@WHLsilvertips) of the WHL (@TheWHL). Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We're looking for fast, instinctual, forwards that are willing to play inside and Matt checks all those boxes," said Doug Wilson Jr., Director of Hockey Operations for the San Jose Sharks. "As Everett's captain this year, he's displayed great leadership and we're excited for him to join our organization following his WHL playoff run."

Fonteyne, a native of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, has skated in 340 games with the Silvertips over a five-year career, totaling 208 points (82 goals, 126 assists), 88 penalty minutes, and a plus-42 rating.

The five-foot-11, 180-pounder, just helped Everett advance to the second round of the WHL playoffs after a four-games-to-one series victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds. Fonteyne led the way in the opening round, collecting eight points (three goals, five assists) in five games. During the regular season, Fonteyne set high-water marks in goals (35), assists (53), points (88), and plus/minus (+27).

Matt's grandfather, Val Fonteyne, played in 820 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Detroit, and New York (Rangers) over a 13-year career that spanned from 1959-72.
