Barons Introduce Their Mascot Derrick The Mountain Lion

July 27, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Oklahoma City Barons News Release

The Oklahoma City Barons found their mascot in an unusual location late yesterday afternoon.

After a meeting with the SMG Staff, members of the Barons staff discovered a mountain lion exploring the halls of the Cox Convention Center. He wasn't stalking any prey, but was learning the easiest way to move around the building to engage fans, take pictures, give high-fives and whip the crowd into a frenzy. Easy to approach, Derrick explained that he wasn't there to harm anyone. He heard the Oklahoma City Barons were in search of a mascot and he wanted the job.

Several of Derrick's relatives have worked as mascots as far east as Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and west to Colorado and California.

Debate about the presence of mountain lions in Oklahoma has existed since the first of the species was spotted in Oklahoma in the mid-1800s. Since that time the cat whose territory stretches from the base of the Rocky Mountains into the plains has spent some time in Oklahoma.

Derrick will begin his work as the Barons mascot in the near future after he and his family make the move to Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma City Barons will be the primary development team for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. In operation since 1936, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 NHL teams. More than 85 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates. The AHL is played in major North American cities such as Houston, San Antonio, Chicago, Austin, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Charlotte.

Season tickets are available for the 10-11 season by calling 232-GOAL (4625) or by visiting the Barons website at okcbarons.com.

NOTE: The Barons congratulate Sara Silverhorn for her suggestion in the Name the Mascot Contest. As the winner of the Barons Name the Mascot contest, she wins a VIP trip for two to Dallas to see the Barons parent club, the Edmonton Oilers, take on the Dallas Stars in January.
