Birmingham Barons News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - Mason Robbins delivered a two-run homer in the fourth inning that staked the Barons to a 4-0 lead which proved to be enough as they took the finale of their series with the Tennessee Smokies 4-3 Friday night.
Starter Thaddius Lowry (0-1, 7.47) tossed 5 2/3 innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three. Lowry earned his first win of the year and the first win by a Barons starting pitcher this season.
Jake Peter got the Barons on the scoreboard first with an RBI single that plated catcher Brett Austin giving Birmingham the early 1-0 lead in the third inning. The following inning third baseman Trey Michalczewski brought home Cameron Seitzer with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Barons but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. With Nick Basto at third base, Robbins then connected on his two-run home run extending the Barons lead to 4-0.
The Tennessee Smokies scored their first run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth courtesy of a David Bote single that brought home Jacob Hannemann.
Barons reliever Will Lamb came on in relief of Lowry in the bottom of the sixth inning getting the final out and pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning before being removed with one out in the eighth.
Righty Miguel Chalas took over for Lamb recording the final two outs of the eighth but ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth. The Smokies got a leadoff double from Jason Vosler which was followed by Jeffry Baez reaching on a fielding error by Cameron Seitzer. Andrew Ely would then single and drive home Vosler cutting the Birmingham lead to 4-2. Carlos Penalver pulled Tennessee within a run on an RBI single that scored Baez making it 4-3. El'Hajj Muhammad took over for Chalas with one out in the inning and got Charcer Brooks to ground out and David Bote to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
