Barons Fall 6-5

July 1, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons were on the wrong end of a see-saw battle with Mobile Wednesday night at Regions Park, falling to the BayBears 6-5 in ten innings.

Bryan Byrne pushed across the winning run on a sacrifice fly to right field. The BayBears put together the winning rally in the tenth inning despite managing just one infield hit. Elijah Rumler reached on an error to leadoff the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Chris Rahl then hit a slow chopper to third base that Javier Colina couldn't field, putting runners at the corner before Byrne's sacrifice fly.

The Barons went into the final frame trailing by a run, as Reid Mahon came in to finish the game. Stefan Gartrell started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a balk. Javier Colina would reach on an error, moving Gartrell to third and giving the home team runners at the corners before Christian Marrero drove in the tying run with a single up the middle.

The Barons jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on the heels of a three-run fifth inning that featured a two-run single off the bat of Robbie Hudson. Hudson came around to score on CJ Retherford's single moments later.

The lead seemed like it would hold up as Daniel Hudson rolled through the first six innings of the game. But the mid-season call-up struggled in the seventh inning, allowing four runs to score on five hits. He was replaced midway through the inning by Clevelan Santeliz with runners on first and second base. Both runners came around to score giving Hudson a final line of five earned runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out five batters and walked one.

Mahon (4-1) picked up the win despite blowing the save in the ninth inning.

Henry Mabee (0-1, 0.00) took the loss in his first appearance with the Barons. The right hander was called up from Winston-Salem earlier in the day to take the roster spot vacated by Jhonny Nunez who was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte.

After alternating wins through the first four games of the series, the two teams will play the fifth game Thursday night. Kyle McCulloch (6-7, 4.32) will try to get the Barons back on the winning side opposite Matt Torra (5-6, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with a fireworks show following the game.
