Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Barons broke out of their early season offensive funk Sunday collecting 14 hits on their way to an 8-4 win over the Montgomery Biscuits in front of 2,889 fans at Riverwalk Stadium.
Catcher Michael Blanke led the offense with three hits while Marcus Semien, Trayce Thompson, Tyler Saladino and Daniel Wagner recorded two hits apiece. Eight of nine players in the Barons lineup recorded at least one hit and five the 14 hits went for extra-bases.
The Barons took an early 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Andy Wilkins and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Short. Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the fifth, the Barons put the game away with five runs. Short delivered the first run of the inning with an RBI triple. He would score on a double by Saladino who scored later in the inning on a two-run single by Wagner. The five run inning drove Biscuits starter Victor Mateo (0-1, 14.54) from the game.
The eight runs were more than enough for Barons starter Scott Snodgress (1-0, 5.40) who picked up the first win of the season for a Barons starter, allowing three runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings.
The eight runs were more than the Barons had scored over their first three games combined. Thompson and Wagner also each stole a base for the Barons, who lead the Southern League with nine steals in four games so far in 2013.
With the win, the Barons improved to 2-2 on the season while the Biscuits fell to 2-2.
The Barons will look to pick up a series victory Monday night as RHP Stephen McCray (NR) takes the hill against RHP Jacob Thompson (NR). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
