Barons Announce 2016 Community Heroes

July 28, 2016 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Barons are proud to announce this year's group of Community Heroes, who will be honored prior to games this series at Regions Field thanks to WBRC FOX6 News.

Prior to Sunday's game July 31, the Barons will recognize the Marine Corps League VA Hospital Visitation Team. This group of men and women enlists and trains volunteers to visit hospitalized veterans, meeting and conversing with up to 25 veterans per day at Birmingham's VA Hospital.

Tuesday will honor Cheryl Bourn, an 11-year survivor of stage three ovarian cancer. Since completing her treatment, Bourn has become a tireless advocate and volunteer for causes supporting GYN cancer research and support. She regularly talks with people about the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers and speaks to second year medical students at UAB annually. Cheryl was one of the 2012 recipients of the American Cancer Society's Life Inspiration Award.

Hueytown police Cpl. Sebastian Goldman will be celebrated Wednesday night. Goldman made news when he purchased shoes for a 19-year-old grocery store employee as an act of kindness earlier this year. Goldman has been a member of the Hueytown force for nearly two decades, and served seven years with the Fairfield Police Department prior to that.

The Barons and WBRC FOX6 News will also honor Theresa De Leon, a firefighter with the city of Birmingham. In addition to firefighting, De Leon has worked for a local radio station, the mayor's Division of Youth Services, the City Council's office, and even helped the city's homicide detectives with translations since moving to Birmingham in 2005.

While off duty earlier this year, De Leon banded together with numerous good Samaritans to free 24-year-old Christian Cooper from a fiery wreck off Interstate-65. Cooper, a Hoover High School graduate, will be reunited with De Leon at Regions Field after returning home from five months of treatment.
