Barnstormers Use Big Inning To Claim Game One

September 26, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers broke a tie score with a six-run fifth inning, en route to defeating the York Revolution 10-4 in Game 1 of the Freedom Division Championship Series on Wednesday evening in front of 5,844 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Down 1-0 in the best-of-five series, the Revs will look to earn a split on the road with Game 2 set for Thursday evening, before returning home on Friday night for the remainder of the series.

Blake Gailen spotted Lancaster a quick 2-0 lead with a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the first inning. It was one of four home runs on the night against Revs starter Ryan Feierabend, who suffered his roughest outing of the season, charged with 10 runs in 4.2 innings of work, absorbing the loss.

York got on the board with a run in the second inning when Chris Nowak, who set a Revs record and led the league with 34 home runs during the regular season, slammed a solo shot to left field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Travis Denker answered with a solo homer of his own, his first of two on the night, which he landed onto the right field porch in the bottom of the second to increase Lancaster's lead to 3-1.

The Revs tied it in the top of the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly to right field by Michael Hernandez, and an RBI single to center from Andres Perez, evening the ledger at 3-3.

Lancaster again had a response, in the form of a bad-hop RBI single with two outs from Tommy Everidge, retaking the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning.

The Revs rallied with two outs in the top of the fifth, as Perez, Nowak, and Johan Limonta all singled to produce the tying run. Limonta's single to right field plated Perez who raced around from second and made a great slide at the plate around catcher Emerson Frostad's tag, knotting the score at 4-4. Barnstormers starter Dwayne Pollok, despite allowing the two-out rally, struck out the side, including notching the final out, a strikeout of Salomon Manriquez with the bases loaded, denying York from ever taking the lead.

Pollok ended up the winner when Lancaster took the lead for good with a six-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Kody Kirkland ignited the rally with an infield single, before Gilberto Mejia and Adam Godwin each bunted for hits to load the bases with no outs. Gailen again gave the hosts the lead with a two-run single up the middle, part of a four-RBI night. It was followed by an Everidge sac fly, and punctuated by a two-run homer to left by Fehlandt Lentini that barely cleared the fence in the corner. Denker later went deep to right with another short porch solo homer, capping the six-run inning and providing the final margin.

Both bullpens were impressive with York combining on 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Lancaster's 'pen did not allow a hit in 4.0 scoreless innings of work.

York's Corey Thurman (14-3, 3.82) gets the ball in Game 2 against Lancaster's John Halama (13-9, 3.15) with first pitch set for 7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
