Barnstormers Set Record With 11-9 Win

September 21, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Fehlandt Lentini homered on the first pitch of the seventh inning, and Ryan Harvey put the Barnstormers into the lead to stay with an RBI single to center later in the inning as Lancaster set the Atlantic League record for wins in a season with an 11-9 victory over Bridgeport Thursday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The victory was Lancaster's 87th of the season, breaking the previous record held by the 2009 Somerset Patriots. It also kept Lancaster one game ahead of the York Revolution in the second half Freedom Division race with three games left to play. Regardless of that outcome, those two clubs will meet in the first round of the playoffs beginning on Wednesday at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Bridgeport took its only lead of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kennard Jones reached on an error by second baseman Gilberto Mejia, and Luis Rodriguez followed with a ground single into left off Ross Peeples. Luis Figueroa drove a double past Blake Gailen in left field to cut Lancaster's previous lead to 7-6. Peeples got one out on Brad Boyer's ground ball and left after a walk to Joey Gathright that loaded the bases.

Joe Bateman got Eddie Rogers on a liner to right, but Prentice Redman floated a single into left center on a 3-2 pitch to give the Bluefish their 8-7 lead. Bateman quickly fanned Willis Otanez to end the inning.

Lancaster quickly recovered as Lentini belted his 19th homer to straight away left field off Pat Bresnahan (1-1). Gailen followed with a single up the middle and stole second. One out later, Harvey drilled a single into center. Gailen was able to score the go-ahead run easily.

The Barnstormers tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth. Adam Godwin led off with a single to right center and stole second. Bridger Hunt dropped down his second bunt single of the night, getting Godwin to third. Luis Figueroa handled Mejia's grounder to second and fired home too late to retire Godwin. The throw eluded Rodriguez, allowing Hunt to take third, and he scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly to center by Gailen.

Beau Vaughan retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, and Jeff Bennett yielded only a two-out infield single in the eighth. Tim Hamulack gave up one run in the ninth on a one-out double by Luis Lopez but settled down to strike out the next two batters to earn his 33rd save of the season.

Gailen finished the night 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Tommy Everidge had a pair of singles and drove in three, and Travis Denker clubbed a three-run homer in the first for the Barnstormers.

Lancaster will head to Southern Maryland to close out the regular season. The Barnstormers will send Dwayne Pollok (14-3) to the hill against right-hander Daryl Thompson (1-2). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: Hamulack's save was his 26th in a row...Starter J.D. Durbin did not factor in the decision for the first time in his last 20 starts...Gailen owns the league lead with a .333 average, five points ahead of Godwin...The Barnstormers successfully fended off their first possible sweep of the season...Lancaster reached double figures in runs scored for the first time since August 29.
