Barnstormers Dropped By Bees

Lancaster Stormers News Release

Not even a mid-game rain delay could turn the Lancaster fortunes on Friday night.

James Skelton homered prior to the storm breaking loose on Clipper Magazine Stadium, and five New Britain hurlers went on to throw an eight-hitter as the Bees topped the 'Stormers, 4-1, in the second game of a four-game weekend series.

Two singles, an error and a Michael Crouse sacrifice fly produced New Britain's first run in the second. Skelton opened the third with a homer to right off Bryan Evans (3-3) for a 2-0 New Britain lead. Steve Carrillo followed with a double to left, but on the ensuing fly ball to right, Caleb Gindl made a perfect throw to double up Castillo at third.

The field was covered after the third inning, and play was held for roughly 1 1/4 hours. After it resumed, Evans held the Bees advantage to 2-0, and Josh Wall did the same in the sixth. However, in the seventh, Jon Jones led off with a dribbler to the third base side of the mound on which Wall could not make a clean play. Jones advanced to second on a wild pickoff throw and scored when Jon Griffin took a double off the fence in right center. Greg Smith made his Lancaster debut and struck out Skelton before Steve Carrillo dumped a single into shallow left center to produce New Britain's final tally.

Brian Dupra worked the first three innings for the Bees but did not come back to the hill after the rain delay. Jarrett Leverett picked up the next 3 2/3 innings, escaping the fourth after Josh Whitaker was caught diving back into first base on a single to right. Lancaster banged out back-to-back hits in both the seventh and eighth innings but failed to score.

Charlie Cutler plated Lancaster's only run of the game on a blast to right in the ninth inning off long time Barnstormers reliever Scott Patterson.

The two clubs hit the field again on Saturday. Kelvin De La Cruz (1-0, 4-6) will make the start against right-hander Cole Johnson (5-5). Fireworks will follow the game that will also feature a Faith and Family Night appearance by former Navy QB Keenan Reynolds, now with the Baltimore Ravens. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
