The Altoona Curve unveiled their awards for the 2016 season awards on Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Outfielder Barrett Barnes was named the team's Most Valuable Player and lefty Cody Dickson was announced as the Pitcher of the Year.
Along with Barnes and Dickson's selections, reliever Montana DuRapau was named the Fireman of the Year for the top bullpen pitcher, while second baseman Erich Weiss was named Ironman of the Year. Outfielder Jon Schwind and third baseman Eric Wood were named Co-Unsung Heroes of the Year as well.
Barnes leads the team with a .310 batting average thanks to a strong second half of the season. He has hit nine home runs this year, including eight in the month of August, while driving in 47 runs. A second-year member of the Curve and a first-round pick by the Pirates in 2012 out of Texas Tech, Barnes was named Eastern League Player of the Week twice last month.
Dickson leads the starting rotation with a 3.67 ERA this season and is tied for the team lead in wins with his 10-5 record. In his 25 starts this year, the Curve have gone 17-8. Dickson Pirates' fourth-round pick in 2013 out of Sam Houston State and is playing his first season at Double-A.
Weiss has played in a team-high 122 games this year, and he was named an Eastern League Post-Season All-Star earlier this week. In his second year with Altoona, Wood leads the team with 16 home runs this season, which is tied for sixth in the E.L. The Oshawa, Ontario native has posted a .255 batting average and driven in 50 runs. Wood was the Pirates' sixth-round draft pick out of Blinn College in 2012.
Schwind is playing his second Double-A season for the Curve while patrolling all three outfield positions. Schwind has hit three homers and added 21 RBIs over the year. A 41st-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2011 out of Marist, he has also made five pitching appearances on the year without allowing a run over 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and five walks with a pair of strikeouts.
