Bandits' rally falls short in 7-5 loss to Snappers

The Quad Cities River Bandits rally fell short when they scored five late runs but dropped the series opener 7-5 with the Beloit Snappers Saturday in front of a season-high 6,867 fans at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.
The Bandits didn't get a hit until the fourth inning when Mike O'Neill (2-for-4) hit a double to lead off the inning. Quad Cities allowed six runs before finally scoring two runs in the sixth inning when Joey Bergman (1-for-3) doubled home two runs.
Quad Cities scored two more runs in the seventh inning when Cody Stanley (1-for-4) singled to score Jonathan Rodriguez (3-for-4). Later in the inning, Edgar Lara (0-for-3) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Stanley.
Rodriguez added another run in the eighth inning when he singled home Bergman and cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Bandits failed to score again.
Bandit starter Anthony Ferrara (L, 11-7) went five innings and allowed a season-high six runs on nine hits. Ferrara struck out four and walked two in the loss.
Beloit starter Blayne Weller (W, 5-5) went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Weller walked one and struck out three in the win. Jose Gonzalez (S, 12) came into the game and recorded one out to pick up the save.
The River Bandits continue the series with the Beloit Snappers on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday. It's also Nestle Purina Dog Days of Summer and Monkey Joe's Kids Run the Bases. Bandit lefty Ryan Copeland (4-3, 4.41) will oppose Beloit right-hander Pedro Guerra (1-1, 6.30). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park.
