Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits entered play on Friday hungry to complete a perfect homestand, but could not finish off the South Bend Silver Hawks in a 7-3 loss at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (12-8) still managed to finish the homestand with a 6-1 record after sweeping a four-game series with Wisconsin and taking two of three from the Silver Hawks. After the River Bandits rallied to take a lead in the sixth inning on Friday, however, South Bend (9-12) scored five unanswered runs to avoid the sweep.

The River Bandits fell behind early thanks to two unearned runs in the opening frame, but chipped away to take a lead. Osvaldo Morales registered his league-leading 21st RBI with a run-scoring single in the first, while Brett Lilley tied the score with a two-out knock in the second. It was the bottom of the sixth when Chris Swauger led off with a double to right, eventually scoring on Charlie Cutler's sacrifice fly for a 3-2 advantage.

But in the top of the seventh, the Silver Hawks struck back. Jack Elmore and Alberto Diaz each singled to open the frame and found themselves at second and third after a wild pitch. Justin Parker delivered a hot smash down the third base line on a 2-0 count, driving home both runs to put South Bend ahead, 4-3. Three batters later, a two-out single by Rossmel Perez made it a 5-3 ballgame.

Silver Hawks' relievers T.J. Hose and Justin Mace did the rest, combining for three no-hit innings to close the door. Meanwhile, South Bend rallied for two more runs in the top of the ninth to reach the 7-3 final.

Ryan Cook (3-0) earned the win thanks to six solid innings in which he allowed three runs on eight hits.

The loss went to Arquimedes Nieto (0-2), who threw 2.1 scoreless frames before yielding three runs on four hits and recording just two outs in the decisive seventh inning.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits will hit the road for six games against the Clinton LumberKings and Great Lakes Loons before returning to Modern Woodmen Park for a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels beginning on May 8. The series kicks off with Going Green Night, featuring an Aluminum Water Bottle Giveaway from the Waste Commission as well as a fireworks show on a Fireworks Friday. One night later the first 1,000 fans will get a free hat from the Association of the United States Army on Military Appreciation Night, while Spatterdash takes the stage for a live post-game concert on a Rockin' Saturday. The series concludes with the first Tailz ‘Er Waggin' Dog Day of Summer on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday, which will also be Make-a-Wish Night at the ballpark!
