 Potomac Nationals

Baez Carolina League Player of the Week

June 9, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va.- With the Potomac Nationals one win or one Wilmington Blue Rocks' loss away from winning the first half title in the Carolina League Northern Division, there could be a lot to celebrate on Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. For Edgardo Baez, the celebration will be two-fold as today he was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week for June 2-9.

Baez had hits in all eight games the P-Nats played over the seven-day stretch going 14-for-29 (.483) with eight of his hits going for extra bases including five doubles and three home runs. The 22-year-old rose to the top of the league leader board in RBI with 42 by driving in 12 runs during the week. He also scored nine times and posted a .996 slugging average.

For the Puerto Rican-native, the accomplishment caps a comeback from a tumultuous 2007 season that saw him hit .278 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 76 games before going on the disabled list on July 13 with a blood clot in his shoulder. The former fourth-round pick underwent season-ending surgery to have it removed.

The 2008 season marks Baez's third tour with the Potomac Nationals. He began the 2006 season with the P-Nats and hit just .103 with two home runs and three RBI in 20 games before being sent down to Low-A Savannah. The outfielder was named a South Atlantic League All-Star in 2005 as he hit .246 with the Sand Gnats and clubbed 11 home runs while driving in 64 runs.

Former Potomac Nationals hurler Jordan Zimmermann was named Pitcher of the Week on May 5, the same day he was sent up to Double-A Harrisburg.

The Potomac Nationals continue their playoff push Monday night against the Winston-Salem Warthogs. First pitch is schedule for 7:05 p.m. as left-hander and former first-round pick Ross Detwiler (4-3) takes the mound trying to help the P-Nats become the first Washington Nationals affiliate ever to qualify for the postseason. He will be opposed by right-hander Cleveland Santeliz (0-0). It is also a Washington Post Dollar Monday as fans can purchase grandstand tickets and hot dogs for just one dollar.
