May 3, 2009 - Texas League (TL) - Corpus Christi Hooks
FRISCO, Texas - Astros hurler Brandon Backe and Polin Trinidad combined on a six-hit shutout as the Hooks topped Frisco 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Backe, in his second rehab start and his first outing with the Hooks, blanked the RoughRiders on three hits and two walks through five innings. He struck out two and threw 72 pitches. Backe earned the win, leaving with the Hooks up 4-0.
Trinidad, activated from the disabled list Saturday, came on in the sixth and tossed four shutout frames to earn the save. He allowed three hits and fanned three. The save was Trinidad\'s first since the 2005 season.
Mark Ori provided all the offense needed by Backe and Trinidad. Collin DeLome got hit by a pitch to start the game and went to second on Drew Meyer\'s single to right. Drew Locke\'s ground ball out moved the runners to second and third. Ori followed with a single to center that scored DeLome and Meyer for a 2-0 Hooks lead.
Felix Molina, with hits in five straight, drilled a line-drive homer to right with two outs in the fourth to make it a 3-0 game. The home run was Molina\'s first this year.
Singles by Ori and Mitch Einertson in the sixth set the table for Jhon Florentino, whose fielder\'s choice ground ball plated Ori with Corpus Christi\'s fourth run. The Hooks capped their day on offense when DeLome and Meyer delivered back-to-back two-out doubles in the ninth.
Backe\'s counterpart, Texas Rangers starter Kris Benson, was saddled with the loss. Benson gave up three runs on five hits and a walk during his five innings on the hill. Benson struck out four while throwing 62 pitches in his rehab effort.
The series at Frisco concludes Monday night at 7:00. Sergio Perez (2-1, 5.40) takes on Frisco southpaw Kasey Kiker (1-1, 2.86) in the final game of the road trip.
