Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators (33-23-5-3, 74 pts.) played three road games last week against two divisional opponents, Bridgeport and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and took home two points to maintain a six-point advantage over Philadelphia for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division.
WEDNESDAY, MAR. 4 @ WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (3-1 L): The Penguins outshot the B-Sens 20-10 through the two periods of play. Binghamton found the back of the net first with a power-play tally off the stick of Brian Lee. Denis Hamel and Greg Mauldin assisted on Binghamton's lone goal of the night. Jeff Taffe scored in the middle period, followed by the game-winning goal from Nick Johnson in the third period. Netminder Jeff Glass turned away 30 shots in the losing effort.
FRIDAY, MAR. 6 @ BRIDGEPORT (6-5 L): The B-Sens found their offensive touch on Friday night against the Sound Tigers. Defenseman Neil Petruic buried his first goal in 117 games and added one assist for a two-point game. Winger Greg Mauldin netted three points (1+2) for the third time this season. Defenseman Brian Lee had two assists for Binghamton, while fellow blueliner Mattias Karlsson buried his sixth marker of the year, all of which have come on the power play.
SATURDAY, MAR. 7 @ WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (2-1 W): Jeff Glass backstopped the B-Sens to the 2-1 win with 42 saves on 43 shots. Right-winger Jeremy Yablonski netted his first goal of the season off a feed from Jim McKenzie. Newcomer Jarrett Konkle collected his first AHL point, assisting on Zack Smith's game-winning goal in the third period. The B-Sens withstood a 43-19 shot disadvantage and were a perfect 6/6 on the penalty kill. The 42 saves by Glass were the second highest this season for the 23-year-old.
THIS WEEK: The B-Sens finish their six-game road trip with visits to the Atlantic Division's Portland Pirates (30-24-3-6, 69 pts.) on Tuesday and Worcester Sharks (32-28-1-2, 67pts.) on Wednesday. With the victory, Binghamton extended its home record to 5-0-0-0 all-time against Portland. VS. WORCESTER: The B-Sens look to sweep the home-and-home series with the Worcester Sharks, top affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Binghamton beat Worcester 5-4 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Nov. 8. Left-winger Ilya Zubov collected three points (1+2) to lead the B-Sens to victory. Defenseman Mattias Karlsson netted one goal and one assist for Binghamton, while former B-Sen and current Ottawa Senator Ryan Shannon had three assists. The Sharks are led by former B-Sen Ryan Vesce, who has 64 points (20+44) this season. His 44 assists are tied for third in the AHL. The Sharks are 20-11-0-1 on home ice this season.
VS. NORFOLK: The B-Sens and Admirals face each other in four straight games, beginning this weekend with a pair at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Home ice has ruled the season series thus far, with Binghamton defeating Norfolk 6-3 at the Arena on Feb. 18. The Admirals got their revenge when they swept a weekend pair in Norfolk on Feb. 20 & 21, winning 5-2 and 4-2 respectively. Danny Bois, Denis Hamel and Zack Smith each netted two goals in the B-Sens 6-3 win. Friday's game is the 50th contest between the two East Division squads.
