Binghamton Senators News Release


LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators won their first game of the week against Norfolk on Friday night. Binghamton lost their first home game of the season on Saturday against Manitoba and were shutout by MARC-ANDRE FLEURY in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. The B-Sens have eight points and are now tied for fourth place in the East Division with Philadelphia and Bridgeport.

FRIDAY OCT. 29TH vs. NORFOLK (5-3 W): Binghamton outshot an opponent in the opening twenty minutes for the first time in five games and rolled to a 5-3 victory against the Admirals. JASON SPEZZA and CHRIS KELLY both scored four points, tying a franchise record that was previously held by four different players. SPEZZA and KELLY both scored short-handed goals in the second period and rookie winger BRANDON BOCHENSKI scored his first professional goal at 10:10 of the first period. Goaltender RAY EMERY made 32 saves on 35 shots for Binghamton. Binghamton finally found a way to score on Admirals goalie MICHAEL LEIGHTON who shutout the Senators in three consecutive games last April. LEIGHTON made 32 saves on 37 Binghamton shots. Binghamton was 0 for 10 on the power play while Norfolk was 1 for 4.

SATURDAY, OCT. 30TH vs. MANITOBA (5-3 L): The B-Sens found themselves on the opposite end of a 5-3 score on Saturday night when they fell to Manitoba in the team's first bid to earn co-coach JOHN PADDOCK'S 500th win. The first six goals of the game were scored on the power play. Defensemen BRIAN POTHIER and ANDY HEDLUND scored early in the second period to give the B-Sens a brief 2-1 lead. But Manitoba's dynamic forwards JASON KING and PETER SARNO scored power play goals less than a minute a part late in the period and Manitoba would not trail again. SARNO and KING came into the game leading the league in scoring with 15 points each. Binghamton rookie defenseman NEIL KOMADOSKI scored his first professional goal at the 3:59 mark of the third period. BILLY THOMPSON took the loss in his second start of the season. THOMPSON made 23 saves on 28 shots. ALEX AULD made 43 saves on 46 shots for Manitoba. Binghamton was 2 for 6 on the power play and Manitoba was 4 for 8.

SUNDAY OCT. 31ST @ WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (2-0 L): Binghamton lost the afternoon Halloween game 2-0 in Wilkes-Barre as Penguins goalie MARC-ANDRE FLEURY earned his first professional shutout. FLEURY was drafted number one overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2003 National Hockey League entry draft. The game was scoreless until winger RAMZI ABID scored on the power play at 19:52 of the second period. Ray Emery played well in net making 23 saves on 24 shots. Center SHANE ENDICOTT added and empty-net goal for the Penguins with only a second remaining. ENDICOTT and ABID each had two points in the game. Binghamton was 0 for 4 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre was 1 for 7 with the lone goal being the game winner.

THIS WEEK: Binghamton hosts two games for a third consecutive weekend. Albany comes to town Friday night and Rochester will be at the Arena on Saturday. Co-coach JOHN PADDOCK will have another shot at his 500th career AHL coaching victory on Friday.

FRIDAY, NOV. 5TH vs. ALBANY (7:05 p.m.): Thunder Stix giveaway sponsored by ESPN/Time Warner Cable: Binghamton will look to even the season series with the River Rats on Friday evening. Binghamton lost their season opener 6-2 in Albany on Oct. 15. Forward ALEKSANDRE SUGLOBOV had a four-point night with two goals and two assists while forward ZACH PARISE scored his first professional goal. B-Sens winger JOSH LANGFELD scored his 100th career AHL point with a goal in the third period. RAY EMERY was relieved early in the second period after giving up four goals on 12 shots. Albany out shot Binghamton 26 to 23. The Senators were 2 for 5 on the power play while the River Rats were 2 for 6. ARI AHONEN earned the win for the River Rats with 21 saves on 23 shots.

SATURDAY, NOV. 6TH vs. ROCHESTER (7:05 p.m.): Post-game season ticket holder party with free food, drinks and beer on the concourse following the game with the players. Post-game skate for season ticket holders following the game (no players). Youth hockey exhibition game during the first intermission: The B-Sens go outside of the East Division for the first of eight contests against the Americans. Last season Binghamton finished with a 5-2-1-0 record against Rochester including a 3-0-1-0 mark at home. The Senators have yet to lose a home contest against the Americans. Former Amerk DENIS HAMEL led the B-Sens in scoring last season with 10 points in eight games (4 + 6). Goalie RAY EMERY led the Senators with a 3-1-1 record and a 1.97 goals against average. Center DOMENIC PITTIS led the way for the Americans with eight points in eight games (2 + 6). Rochester goalie RYAN MILLER had a 1-4-1 record with a 1.97 goals against average in the 2003-2004 series.

SENS SNIPPETS: Co-coach JOHN PADDOCK can pick up AHL career coaching victory number 500 on Friday against Albany. He currently has 499 victories to his credit. BRIAN McGRATTAN leads the AHL in penalty minutes with 105. The next closest player is former B-Sen Dennis Bonvie with 70 ..JASON SPEZZA and CHRIS KELLY tied a franchise record with four points in a game on Oct. 29 against Norfolk. The record is now held by six players including current B-Sen GREG WATSON.The B-Sens tied a franchise record with two short-handed goals in a game on Oct. 29 vs. Norfolk. The Senators also scored two short-handed goals in a 4-1 home win against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Oct. 25, 2002.The B-Sens allowed four power-play goals in a game for the third time in franchise history on Saturday, Oct. 30 against Manitoba. JASON SPEZZA is this week's nominee for CCM Vector AHL Player of the Week.CHARLIE STEPHENS picked up his 100th career AHL point with a goal against Norfolk on Oct. 29.

SENS IN THE COMMUNITY: Players will be at The Clay Ground on Monday, Nov. 1 to paint clay pottery for charity. The plates that are painted Monday afternoon will displayed at the arena between Nov. 13 and Nov. 27. Fans can make bids during an ongoing silent auction that will end during the second intermission of the home game against Rochester on Nov. 27. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. The Clay Ground is located at 736 Vestal Parkway East next to Jo-Ann's Fabrics. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. and is closed to the public although media are invited to attend..The Binghamton Hockey Booster Club will host the annual Meet the Players Dinner at Brothers II in Endwell at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. The event is open to Booster Club members only.
