November 21, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK:

The Binghamton Senators won two of three games last weekend and goaltender KELLY GUARD earned his first two professional shutouts as Binghamton blanked Toronto 3-0 on Friday and Springfield 1-0 on Sunday.

FRIDAY, NOV. 18TH vs. TORONTO (3-0 W):

KELLY GUARD earned his first professional shutout by stopping all 32 Toronto shots in a 3-0 win against the Marlies on Friday night. Winger STEVE MARTINS' power-play goal at 11:09 of the opening period was all the scoring Binghamton needed. GREG WATSON scored his fourth goal of the season and BRETT CLOUTHIER tallied his first goal in a B-Sens sweater. Binghamton's penalty kill stopped all nine short-handed situations and the Sens converted on two of five power plays. KELLY GUARD earned first star honors for his efforts while Toronto goalie J.F. RACINE earned the third star for stopping 36 of Binghamton's 39 shots. Binghamton goalie BILLY THOMPSON did not dress after tweaking his groin during the morning skate. The win was Binghamton's third straight on home ice.

SATURDAY, NOV. 19TH @ ALBANY (3-6 L):

The Senators were outscored 2-1 in each period on Saturday night as the River Rats took a 6-3 victory in the first meeting of the season between the squads. DENIS HAMEL had two goals in the defeat and CHARLIE STEPHENS had the other. Leading the way for Albany was 18-year-old rookie forward NICKLAS BERGFORS who had three points (2 goals, 1 assist) for the Rats. KELLY GUARD was relieved midway through the second period after allowing Albany's fourth and game-winning goal to winger AARON VOROS. JEFF GLASS, who turned 20 on Saturday, made his AHL debut and stopped eight of 10 shots. Binghamton received 10 power-play opportunities and converted on three. Albany scored on two of five chances.

SUNDAY, NOV. 20TH @ SPRINGFIELD (1-0 W):

KELLY GUARD bounced back from a rough outing on Saturday and stopped all 21 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the weekend. Rookie PATRICK EAVES scored the Senators lone goal, and his first professional game-winner, at 7:50 of the second period. Despite playing their third game in three nights, the Senators easily outshot the Falcons 32 to 21. Springfield goalie BRIAN EKLUND played well stopping 31 of 32 shots to earn the second star honors. Neither team scored a power-play goal with Binghamton being shutout in five chances and Springfield failing to convert on eight opportunities.

THIS WEEK:

Binghamton will host three opponents this week beginning with a Thanksgiving Day showdown against the Syracuse Crunch. The high-flying Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins make their first appearance of the season at the Arena on Saturday and the Philadelphia Phantoms will play in Binghamton for the second time this month on Sunday.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 23RD @ ROCHESTER (7:05 p.m.):

The Senators will make their first trek of the season to Blue Cross Arena in Rochester for a mid-week meeting with the Amerks. Rochester is currently in third place in the North Division with a 10-7-0-0 record and 20 points. Amerks forward JASON POMINVILLE leads the AHL in goals with 16 and is tied for fifth in scoring with 21 points (16 goals, 5 assists). Also among the league's top ten in scoring is forward DEREK ROY who has 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists) in only eight games to tie with DENIS HAMEL and two others for tenth in scoring. Rochester's league-leading power play (26.4%) will provide a tough test for Binghamton's last-place penalty kill (76.4%).

THURSDAY, NOV. 24TH vs. SYRACUSE (6:05 p.m.):

In the only American Hockey League game scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, the Syracuse Crunch will make the short drive down Interstate 88 for a 6:05 p.m. contest against the B-Sens. The teams will be meeting for the first of eight times this season. Binghamton holds a 14-7-2-0-1 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) advantage in the all-time series. Through 16 games the Crunch are 8-8-0-0 and tied for fourth place in the North Division with the Toronto Marlies. Crunch center GEOFF PLATT is tied for third in scoring among rookies with 18 points (12 goals, 6 assists) in 16 games.

SATURDAY, NOV. 26TH vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (7:05 p.m.):

The red-hot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will make their first appearance of the season at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night. The Pens have earned 33 of a possible 34 points in 17 games and are leading the league in both scoring (4.59 goals per game) and defense (1.94 goals allowed per game). Leading the way for the Pens is winger MICHEL OUELLET who has points in 12 consecutive games (9 goals, 14 assists) and ranks second overall in league scoring with 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists). Six Penguins are among the league's top ten in plus/minus ratings including league-leader NOAH WELCH (+15). Binghamton holds a 13-8-4-0-0 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) advantage in the all-time series, but lost the first meeting of the season 1-5 in Wilkes-Barre on Oct. 22.

SUNDAY, NOV. 27TH vs. PHILADELPHIA (5:05 p.m.):

Despite Sunday's game being only the twentieth of the season for the Senators, it will be the fourth meeting with Philadelphia. Binghamton is 1-1-1-0 in the previous three meetings having lost the last game 2-5 due in part to a hat trick by former B-Sen winger PAT KAVANAGH. The Phantoms begin this week only two points ahead of the Senators with a 6-9-1-1 mark. Philadelphia's power play is connecting on only 12.2% of its attempts and ranks ahead of only Norfolk (11.6) in the league.

SENS SNIPPETS:

Hockey on Thanksgiving is a long-standing tradition in Binghamton. A game has been played in Binghamton on Thanksgiving Day each year except for two since the Broome Dusters of the North American Hockey League came to town in 1973. The home team's record in those games is 14 wins, 15 losses and two ties. The Senators will continue that tradition on Thursday as the Syracuse Crunch will visit the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the first time this season. The B-Sens are 2-1-0-0-0 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) on Thanksgiving Day. All three games have been decided by one goal with Binghamton outscoring the opposition 9-8 overall...Binghamton is 4-2-0-0 in its last six games after starting the season 1-7-1-1...Saturday's game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will be televised locally on UPN-8.

SENS IN THE COMMUNITY:

Winger BRETT CLOUTHIER, defenseman NEIL PETRUIC and goaltender BILLY THOMPSON will visit the third grade classroom of teacher Barb Phillips on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. to read and chat with her students at Clayton Avenue Elementary School in Vestal. The B-Sens are visiting the class for a third straight year.

B-SENS PLATE AUCTION OFF TO A GREAT START:

The Binghamton Senators annual plate auction got off to a great start on Friday night. With two games left in the three-game silent auction, the plates have already raised $1,960 of their goal to raise $5,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. Each year the Senators show off their artistic sides by decorating bisque plates that are auctioned during multiple home games in November with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish. DENIS HAMEL'S snowman design is leading the way with a top bid of $375. The auction will end when the horn sounds at the conclusion of the second period of Binghamton's Saturday night game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
