Game #140 - Saturday, September 1, 2012

NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 7:05 PM

LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets slugged three home runs, including back-to-back shots by Wilmer Flores and Allan Dykstra, in an 8-5 win over the Trenton Thunder last night. Dustin Martin led the charge with a three-hit night, finishing a double shy of the cycle. Flores concluded his red-hot August with his fourth homer in the last nine games. After scoring just one run over thirteen innings in their two previous games against Trenton starter Brett Marshall, the B-Mets tagged the righty for seven runs on nine hits over five innings. Greg Peavey tossed six shutout innings before coughing up four runs on five hits in the seventh, his final frame. Despite the bumpy inning, Peavey earned his eighth win of the season. Brad Holt allowed a run in the eighth and Ryan Fraser tossed a perfect ninth to collect his fourth save with Binghamton.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (8-10, 3.61) makes his 23rd and final start of the season. He faces the Thunder for the second time this year. The southpaw comes off a loss to the Reading Phillies on August 27 in which he allowed four runs on ten hits over five frames. It was the second straight game he has allowed double digit hits. Cohoon fell to the Thunder on May 15. He surrendered seven runs on ten hits over seven innings, with five of the runs and four of the hits coming in his final frame.

RHP Craig Heyer (2-5, 6.40) takes the mound for his 11th start of the year with the Thunder. He was tagged for seven runs on seven hits over 2-1/3 innings in a loss in his most recent start against the New Britain Rock Cats on August 27. Heyer started the year with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (AAA), but was sent back to Trenton after making one relief appearance. He made seven starts before being put on the shelf from mid-May to late June. Since returning to action on June 30, he has appeared in 17 games, making three starts. Heyer faced the B-Mets on July 18, tossing two shutout innings of relief. Heyer was selected by the Yankees in the 22nd round in 2007.

BACK-TO-BACK JACKS: After Wilmer Flores blasted a two-run homer in the second inning, Allan Dykstra followed in his footsteps with a deep drive to dead center. It was the first time the B-Mets hit consecutive homers this season. The B-Mets had not done it since July 15, 2011, when Jordany Valdespin and Josh Satin went in a row against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR: Dustin Martin went 3-for-5 last night and finished a double shy of the cycle. It is the third time in the last nine games a B-Met has been one hit shy of the rare feat. Wilmer Flores game within a triple of it against Portland on August 23 and was a home run short in Reading on August 28. Only one B-Met has hit for the cycle in the franchise's history: Josh Satin. He performed the feat on June 24, 2011 against the Bowie Baysox.

QUITE THE MONTH: Wilmer Flores capped the month of August with a two-run homer last night, his fourth in the last nine games. Over 28 games in the month, Flores hit .377 (40-106), the second-best mark in the Eastern League. He collected ten doubles, one triple, five homers, 13 RBI and scored 21 runs,

FINISHING STRONG: B-Mets outfielder Pedro Zapata extended his hitting streak to four games with a two-hit performance last night. It was his second streak of four in August. He finished his best month of the season hitting .280 over 17 games with two doubles and six runs scored.

SEPTEMBER SPRINT: The B-Mets wrap up their season with three games in September, the fewest scheduled in the month since they played only one contest in 2008. In their 21-year history, they have gone 34-47 in September, excluding postseason results. The B-Mets went 1-4 in this month last season and haven't had a winning record since they went 3-2 in 2005.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series with their final night game of the season tomorrow at 6:35 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni makes his last start against LHP Vidal Nuno.
